My endo is wanting to add a drug called Glycet with the Glucophage XR that I take to get better control of my sugars. I had a reading of 157 after a meal and he wants to see if that will help me. My hope is that I won't feel so miserable after eating. I eat very healthy but bread isn't even an option because I have severe reactions to carbs extreme fatigue, etc...
Thanks in Advance!

Candace, have you had only ONE reading that high after a meal? That doesn't seem like the end of the world.
Things you could try first before starting another med...are you drinking tons of water with meals? Are you following an insulin resistance way of eating that balances carbs with proteins? Did you have a fever that day? Or were you particularly stressed? Have you tried taking a walk or other exercise after meals?
How frequently do you test yourself? If you have a pattern of high readings after meals, maybe you'd want to try another med. But if you had only one that high.......well, I'm not a doc, but that's not really really bad. You need more info on what your patterns are.
If you haven't already, go over to the Diet folder, and read about the Insulin Resistance diet. Eating that way helps with the insulin and glucose spikes after meals, and you won't get that sick feeling.

Actually, I have been feeling unwell for a couple of months. As you see from my signature I have been taking Glucophage XR for about three years. I exercise three times a week at Curves but to be honest, if I have food that offends my body of any kind (like bread) and I am not talking loads of bread but any I feel lethargic and tired. I have lost about 15 lbs and am up all night using the restroom. I asked my endo to further test before adding something else and he is concerned that the Glucophage may not be working as well. He actually did a gluten test to see if I am allergic. I told him I wasn't allergic to gluten I was allergic to CARBS. He laughed. I do eat very healthy and very balanced but I also know it is not normal to feel so miserable after eating. I cannot eat even breaded chicken without that response. I don't test my sugars but three years ago before Glucophage I had a reading of 190 after the glucose load. I stayed in the 130's for two hours straight, so maybe my insulin isn't clearing the glucose fast enough. I have done some reading on the drug he is wanting to prescribe and it says that it helps the carbohydrates that I do eat digest more slowly. I am thinking maybe that is what I need. Not all women have these responses (the ones I talk about) after eating but maybe alot of us do. My grandmother was diabetic and I remember her sleeping alot after meals. I thought it was strange at the time, but possibly something I have acquired through genetics. (Same type of problem, my IR maybe not.) I have complained with not being able to lose weight and then all the sudden my body just decided okay fine. I only eat vegetables and meat sometimes I will eat half of a bun. I try to link and balance my meals so I won't feel rotten. Often when I eat I have nausea and sometimes I feel like hmmm, I wonder how that is going to make me feel so I decide against it. I am going to get a glucometer and hopefully shed some insight and see what is happening. Thanks for your response. I just wondered if anyone on the site is taking this drug to see any side effects or interactions.

A reading of 157 after a meal isn't high. Anything over 180 TWO hours after eating is considered high. Here's some info:
Q: What is a normal blood sugar reading?
A: A normal blood sugar reading depends on when you check your blood sugar. For non-pregnant adults, the American Diabetes Association recommends: Fasting and before meals
80 - 120 mg/dl
Bedtime
100 - 140 mg/dl
2 hr after a meal
180 mg/dl or less
You should seek guidance if three or more of your readings exceed these values: Fasting and before meals
under 80 or over 140
Bedtime
under 100 or over 160
2 hr after a meal
over 180
Also, what was your A1C reading (the three month average glucose test)?
Your glucose tolerance test readings were in the normal range (under 200 after 1 hour, under 140 after 2 hours), but that was 3 years ago so maybe you need another one?
Met makes me more sensitive carbs. I get much more tired after eating any amount of starchy carbs (like bread) than before I went on Met. If I were you, I would definitely go ahead and get a home monitor and really see what's going on with your blood sugars before adding anything else into the mix. Glycet can cause gastrointestinal side effects and hypoglycemia (especially when combined with another medicine), and you should be sure you need it before adding it.

My endo hasn't checked my A1c levels. That is something I should ask for. I don't know, it seems like with this syndrome I can complain all day about how I feel and noone really seems to care why I am having these reactions to food. I have been to many endo's with no avail. They are more interested in the diabetes spectrum of things, and although I don't test as diabetic know I have something wrong in processing foods. What, I am unsure. It is just very frustrating. I will get a monitor. I have read up on Glyset and see that it can cause some problems. I thought endo's were supposed to help figure out what is happening. I also think with the weight loss, frequent urination he is concernced that my sugars aren't being controlled. Linking and balancing have been the key to health for me. I have felt tremendously better since starting the drug three years ago, but lately fatigue is my friend. Ick! Thanks again for the info!
