Hey Cysters!! I was just wondering...My Dr. put me on Prometruim as a starter. He said if I ovulate I wouldn't have to take Chlomid. I've taken it for a few months, and according to the ovulation kits, I AM ovulating, but we are not conceiving. Not only that, but I end up getting my period on day 22...??? Is that normal? Has anyone else been on this medication? Has anyone had similar/different experiences? Please share...
I've tried it for one month, to bring on a period. I took 10 pills of 200mg (i think?) and a few days after I stopped, I got my period. But I'm pretty sure that I didn't ovulate. As far as I know, prometrium is just like provera, except it is exactly the kind of progesterone your body should produce (and provera is somewhat altered and thus causing more side effects but cheaper $$).
But I might be wrong, seems like you ovulated... actually, now it's been 28 days since I finished taking the prometrium and I think I ovulated a few days ago (since I now have 5 high temps in a row and my mucus was eggwhite back then...) but I must say that I did take NPC for 14 days just before the temps went high, so who knows if it was because of the prometrium or not....?
forgot to ask... are you taking prometrium continuously? and how many mg?
And are you relying on the Ovulation Predictor (which measure the LH?) or using a combination of FAM (Fertility Awareness Method)?
I'm asking just because it's possible for us (PCOS) that those predictor could be unreliable since we tend to have a consistent high LH. But obviously, if you tested if before and it wasn't high and became high, then I would think it is reliable...
I have taken Prometrium several times. The first couple of cycles that I took it, I would get very dizzy, weak & nauseated about
30 minutes - 1 hour after taking it. So I started taking it at
bedtime & on an empty stomach and that seemed to decrease
the side effects. I rarely have side effects from it now. It is
preferred by my RE over Provera, the nurse told me Prometrium
is a more natural form of progesterone.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. I am a bit concerned now after reading what you two have mentioned. The only thing my Dr. advised me to do was to buy an ovulation kit, and that is what I have been using to see if I've ovulated. According to you guys, those don't always work.
To answer some other questions: I only take Prometruim on days 14-20, but then my period arrives two days later, which according to my Dr. is early. Then I am supposed to start taking it again 14 days later, so it feels like my periods are arriving closer and closer every month. It is so ironic because before I didn't have a period, and now it feels like it comes every 2-3 weeks.
Someday my DH and I will have children and all of this will be worth it!!!

I see you want to conceive... I would suggest that you take your BBT every morning, that will help you to time your intercourse accordingly instead of shooting in the dark. If you can get your hand on this book (Taking charge of your fertility), it does explain how to take it and what it represents. Predictor might help, but might as well use the temperature and mucus as well since it's cheap (only the cost of the thermomether). Once you'll read the book (you could get it from the library if you can't afford it), you'll understand what I mean by mucus!
Concerning your short cycle, one thing you can do is to extend the time that you take the prometrium (from day14 to day26) or to start prometrium (from day20 to day26). I don't recommend you to change this without consulting your doctor, but if she/he agrees, then that would extend your cycle by 1 week.
Personally, I would even think that starting prometrium at day14 (unless you ovulate earlier) will prevent you from ovulating, since progesterone is an hormone release by your body after ovulation. So, if you haven't yet ovulated, once you start using it, your body will think that you already have.
Thanks Winter!! I will go buy the book tomorrow. I am pretty new at this...can you tell? After I was diagnosed, I pretty much just watched my diet and took my glucophage, but now that we want a baby, things have become much more complicated. Things are getting even more crazy due to a change in insurance, which means new doctors...again.
