Well, hypothyroidism is often misdiagnosed as depression, since that is a hallmark symptom. Studies have shown that Cytomel, a T3 drug, can alleviate depression in thyroid patients. However, it would be best for you to get a full workup; if you are hypothyroid, then taking Cytomel along with a T4 drug (such as synthroid), or Armour (a natural med that contains both T4 and T3, as well as other thyroid hormones), may help with the depression, along with other symptoms you may have. But if you are not hypothyroid and you take thyroid meds, you may be putting your health at risk. When you begin taking them, your thyroid gland becomes lazy and produces less hormone on its own, requiring frequent blood checks and medication adjustment until your levels are normalized. Many people actually feel worse soon after they begin meds because of this. You don't want to put your body through this extra stress unless it is necessary (i.e. unless your thyroid gland is not producing optimum hormone levels on its own).
