Smile Anyone taking Bcp's and Metformin??

Hi, I am new here and was diagonosed with PCOS in June 2005. I am currently on 1700mg Met, and have not had a period sine Oct. 2005. We want another baby, but I never had any problems with my period till I gained all this weight, I am 35 as was very regular until 2 years ago. My doctor thinks if I lose the weight I will go back to normal, if that is possible. Anyway, I don't think it can be healthy to go so long with no period, so think I am going to ask the doctor to put me on bcp's and still stay on the metformin, since I have lost 10 pounds since starting it in January. Has anyone had luck on Metformin and bcp's together? Does anyone know how long it takes to start a period after starting Metformin, or maybe it just isn't working for me.

If it's only been since last Oct since you had your period, I wouldn't worry about that quite yet. Keep up w/ the met and weight loss for a little while and see what happens. 6 years ago, my dr's started me on provera and clomid, for months and months, while we were TTC. I switched dr's and he started me on Met (1500mg) and I started having my period on my own within2 months and got pgnt the 4th month. Plus is really jumpstarted my weightloss. Both the met and weightloss will help you. If you are losing weight easier, the met is helping. On the off chance you do start ovulating, you don't want the bcp's interfering. Also, depending on the type of bcp, it could mess up your hormones even more. BCP's are good at "masking" pcos symptoms. If you are still worried about having a period, ask you dr to put you on Provera. This will induce a period after a series (7-10 days??, it's been so long I can't remember) of days.

The doctor did prescribe progestrogen on Mar. 2, which I took 7 days and still no period. I am very concerned, as I know this is not good. I just want to get a period. I have been on the Metformin for 2 months with no results, but just started the new dosage of 1700 mg twice a day on March 2nd. Actually I just read the other day that it can take up to 6 months to get a period after starting Met. So I think I will just wait it out, hopefully once some of this weight comes off, all will be fine.
