Default Anyone taking Fortamet

I noticed noone mentions the drug Fortamet in here. Does anyone take this medication for your insulin resistance? I thought it was the generic form of metformin but it still cost the same so it can't be the generic. Does anyone know anything about this drug?

Fortamet is a brand name that is basically a time released metformin that is supposed to give you fewer GI side effects and the 500mg pill is small, round and easy to swallow. Few people take it here, I think because of the cost. Insurance companies prefer that you take generic metformin. I switched to metformin ER (generic) instead of Fortamet and reduced my copay from $40 to $5.

Wow! Thanks for the information. I asked my doctor to prescribe me the generic form but he gave me Fortamet instead. I think I'm going to give him a call in the morning. Thanks so much for the information.

I just started taking this. My co-pay for the Fortamet was about $50.

LadyBlue - Did your doc have to have the prescription changed, or is that something that you can just request from the pharmacist?

I think the pharmacist told me that Fortamet technically has no generic, so he couldn't substitute like they do with other pills. I got a new prescription at my next doc appointment after looking up on my insurance website which metformin types were covered on the lowest copay. Your doc might be able to phone it in, though.
