I've just started taking Metformin three times daily (500mg) per pill. I do not have insulin resistance problems and have had glucose fasting and tolerance tests-all normal. I have historically had anovulation since menarche, then it improved (through better diet) to late ovulation since around age 35. Now I ovulate around day 16, 18, 20...thereabouts. My OB still recommended that I try the Metformin, as it could further improve my cycles and help me to get pregnant.
I'm 41, just had a LAP for severe Endo (which I never suspected I had!) and had one early m/c-(anembryonic pg) at 39 and one ectopic at 40. I haven't had a successful pg yet and am desperate cause I don't have a lot of time AND can't afford IVF treatments.
I'm trying anything that might even be suspected of helping. Does anyone have a success story with Metformin even though they didn't have the insulin problems AND were already ovulating on their own?
I don't know if I was Oing or not, but my insulin labs always came back borderline or normal. My Doc diagnosed me on symptoms and you can see by my signature line that it, combined with IR diet and exercise have worked wonders. My male hormones and periods are normal and I have been at or below my goal weight since 2003.
If you check out the FAQ thread on this forum, there is TONS of info on non-Insulin Resistant women and the benefits of met (studies etc). Check it out!

Thanks for the information. I did look at some of the info on IR, non-IR and Met therapy. It does appear to help all different types of PCO gals. Although I currently don't have IR, my sister and brother have Type II Diabetes, my father (Type I) died at 61 from Diabetes and almost everyone on his side of the family has some form of Diabetes.
My sister (with same menstrual/fertility history as mine) was diagnosed with PCO, so I'm assumming that I'm going down the right path by taking the drug and eating natural, whole foods. Easier said than done...it's taken me till now (40) to really take my health seriously and really change my eating habits. And it wasn't until last summer that I was diagnosed (many wasted years not knowing what was wrong with me).
I admire your loyalty to exercise and hope to be as active as you are. I know that daily activity makes a huge difference with everything in health.
Thanks for all the information and congrats on your success with pregnancy and health.
midwest gal, I just wanted to say it is never too late. You can be 40, and healthy, too. The smallest steps can give you really significant results I'm not IR according to bloodwork either, but the Met has been helping me in so many ways.
Take care.

Thanks. I have to correct you though...I don't exercise daily. When i was losing my weight I worked out 4-5 yimes a week, but now since I am running pretty intensely I now only workout 3-4 days a week. I am a big believer that I need recovery time to perform at my best and my weight, hormones and periods haven;t suffered at all for it due to the diet aspect and the intensity.

Yes, all of my insulin levels were normal as well. This is my second month on Met and Tamoxifen. Tomorrow I will find out if they are working on my day 14 u/s. Wish me luck!!!
I to tested with normal insulin levels. That doesn't mean your not IR. In fact with the family history and that fact that you have PCOS I would lean in that direction.
Met helped me have a normal cycle for the first time in many years just in the first month of taking it. I am not trying to be Pg but I defiantly OV or at least had all the signs.
Be encouraged your on the right track!

Midwest- you are very similar to me it sounds like. i have had anovulation or rare ovulation since menarche. i've nevre been pregnant. I have no symptoms or lab evidence of IR or PCOs other than irregular cycles but my doctor swear up and down that I have PCOS. I though she was crazy but she is very studied in the condition and she started me on metformin and low and behold for the first time in my life I have semi-regular cycles (usually ovulate around day 18-20). Still no pregnancy but at least we are moving in the right direction. PCOS is a syndrome so every one has different symptoms and some of us have very few. Good luck with everything and keep your head high! I am doctor and just had a patient who is 42 and just had her first baby. Brooke Shields is 40 and pregnant. 40 is the new 30 and its a very good decade to become a mom!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation...according to my labs I'm not IR but I did have symptoms of it. My Dr. said Met would help w/ovulation but would not regulate my periods. I have had one successful pregnancy before that pregnancy I when I went of BC pills I did have a normal cycle, but I was taking Met for awhile before stopping BC pills...this time I just stopped taking BC Pills in early Dec had a period at the end of Dec...no period since then? Was having symptoms of IR went to my Dr. he prescribed Met again at the end of Jan...still no period and I swore last time it helped regulate this.
Good Luck to you! Keep your chin up.
