I'm going to see my endo next friday and I'm going to ask him if I can take Spiro; he asked if I was interested in Spiro on my last visit and I chickened out.
Anyone on Spiro at the moment? I did a search for spiro and found out that a lot of people 'LOVE' this stuff.. anyone hate this stuff? Please tell me your experience with Spiro...
Couple of questions:
1. do you get an initial breakout??? Was it bad? how long did it last?
2. any side effects?
3. Can you take this drug long-term?
4. how long did it take you to see improvements and what dosage are you on?
I have been on Spiro for about a month, I love it! Although, since I have been on 100 mgs a day I kind of have to pee more than usual! The doc prescribed it to me cause of hair but I have noticed it has helped with body pimples, like on my arms and legs. I think that since its helping with the hair its helping with ingrowns. Good Luck with it!!
1. do you get an initial breakout??? Was it bad? how long did it last? - No, remeber it is merely an anti-androgen
2. any side effects? - There is a potassium sparing effect, hence your doc should test your potassium from time to time (high potassim is called hyperklemia and could cause heart trouble) and I find that I have to force myself to eat which is a symptom but I'm not complaining...
3. Can you take this drug long-term? - I honestly don't know, but so far its been really good to me, reducing facial hair quite a bit and lowering my blood pressure.
4. how long did it take you to see improvements and what dosage are you on? - for me to see an improvment in my hairyness it took 4 days. Growth really slowed its great...

Hi! thanks for the reply... WOW!!! Spiro sounds awesome!!! I really hope it'll work on my skin and my hairs...I can't believe you saw results in 4 days!!! that's just beyond words!!!
Are you taking any other medication? I just started Diane35 six weeks ago and Meformin a week ago so I'm a little worried about adding Spiro to the mix...
Heres the grand total of what I am taking...dum...dum...dum...
For my asthma-
Accolate
Zyrtec
Provential Inhaler (as needed)
Abuterol Inhalation Solution (as needed)
Nexuim
For PCOS-
Fortamet- 1500 mgs
Aladactone- 100 mgs
Yasmin (endo put me on that because Aladactone can cause birth defects)
SO...if the Alacadactone doesn't affect me with all the friggin drugs I am taking I don't think it would effect you...heehe. But talk to your doctor anyway about it just to make sure. However, rememeber that it works differnent for every woman so if your results are different don't be disapointed! (Besides I had more androgen than a linebacker...)

I've been on it about 10 years (i'm forty now) - so I'd say long term is OK.
(only diagnosed with PCOS - finally - a few months ago)
No initiial breakout. My results - - i think i cleared significantly within a month's time (but it's been a while)
side effects - - it's a diuretic, so you'll likely urinate more frequently.
Also, it's "potassium sparing" - so you not only do NOT want to ever supplement potassium, but watch what you eat. (bananas and sweet potatoes come to mind - two of my favorite higher potassium foods)
Spironolactone was really a godsend for me. Hope it works great for you.
I have been on Spiro for about a month and a half now. I went on it to reduce facial hair.
1. No initial breakout, that I can recall--but I have always had pretty bad skin, so it's hard to remember if there was a change.
2. I get REALLY dizzy a lot now. They say this is a side-effect, and I know that I should drink more water, but it's hard for me to do.
Also, I have MAJOR salt cravings. I ate a lot of salt before, but now I crave it even more.
Also, I have gotten really sick in the middle of the night a couple of times--I had to throw up violently. Not sure if this medicine is the reason, but it seems to be the only constant.
3. Not sure about long-term
4. I don't see much difference. Maybe my skin is a little more even, and I think I am breaking out a little less, but I wasn't actually looking for it, because I didn't know until recently that it was supposed to help your skin. It does keep me from retaining water, though, and I love that because I was always pretty puffy at certain times of the month. My face is rarely puffy ever now.
Hey thanks for your reply! I've been on Spiro for 10 days now and I don't see much of a change. I don't have any side effects at all besides peeing al ot but I do drink a lot of water everyday. I also got a small initial breakout during the first few days. I went on Spiro for excess hair and acne so I'm really hoping it's going to work soon...I wonder when people actually start to see results???
How much spiro are you taking a day? I've been taking 150mgs but will up to 200mgs in another 10 days. Also if you don't mind me asking, are you taking BCPs? I was on Diane for 2 months but I'm going to stop this month and only take spiro and met...hopefully my periods will be ok...
I am taking 100 mg 2x a day. I didn't take any yesterday because I was feeling so sick from all the salt the day before that I took a break! I'm going to call my doctor and ask about that. I've never craved anything so much in my entire life as I crave salt while on this drug!
I am taking a generic bcp-- Low-ogestrel 28. It is only $10 a month on my insurance, whereas the first one I was prescribed was going to cost me $38 a month! Also, this one is causing fewer side effects. I was always really depressed and moody on the pill, and now I'm not! Hooray!
Make sure you talk to your doctor about going off the bcp before you do it, because it is very important that you don't get pregnant while on spiro, my doctor told me. Even while on the pill, my husband and I are using condoms, just to be sure.
Oh, also, I have yet to see any difference in hair growth from the drug, but my doctor told me not to get my hopes up, that it could take up to three months to see any results. It's kind of silly, though, because I am undergoing laser hair removal, so it seems like by the time I should be seeing results, I won't know if it's from the laser treatment or from the drug treatment!
Well, best of luck to you on everything, and keep us posted on your progress!
