I have Hashimoto's but fortunately I have not gone hypo yet. I am supporting my thyroid with Selenium supplements. You can do a google search on 'selenium thyroid' if you would like more info.
I also take fishoils and evening primrose oil, vit B complex and zinc - my Dr said these are a must for 'thyroid support'.
Loved your eco-motherhood- sig I did 4 children in cloth nappies etc.
I am taking B6 200mg per day, I was taking EPO for the first half of my cycle prior to O, but I'm now in the luteal phase and it's not recommended to take it then.
I don't take fish oil but try to eat fish every so often.
Thanks, I'll check kellymom.com for the selenium!

I have Hashimoto's as well. Seems a bit unfair that we should be allowed to have more than one hormonal issue doesn't it? Is your thyroid being tested by your Endo or someone else. I have discovered that my pcp and ob/gyn's ideas of "normal range" don't match my endo's idea. His parameters for normal are much narrower and he has upped my Synthroid yet again!
What I actually wanted to mention is the fact that you are taking Levothyroxine. The FDA says that a generic must be within +/- 10% of the actual strength of the name brand. The name brand only varies +/- 2% and when you're talking Mcg that 8% can make a real difference. My Endo recommended switching to the name brand for that reason although he has no problems with me using other generics.
The re I originally used didn't care that I was on generic. Now under pcp care with kaiser permanente, the guy is just dreadful. He actually manipulated a broken bone and said it wasn't broken then told me it didn't need to be set until I pestered for an xray which shock and awe revealed it was broken.
SOoooooooo.........right now the fact that he can actually even halfway interpret results, I am just glad the guy refilled my rx.
I've always been on the generic and told to stay on it since it was what I started with.

You are right, it's best to stay with the med that you started with. Switching between brands can mess with the dose, because of the difference in the actual strength.

That's my point. Generics don't have as tight a control on their dosages. Also, pharmacies will switch brands if they find cheaper suppliers. That means they could change it and you would never known since all your bottle says is the actual medicine rather than the brand.

The bottle should say if it is the name brand drug or generic. If your doc writes the script for "dispense as written" you will receive the brand s/her wants. I always check my Synthroid at the pharmacy before leaving to make sure it is the correct dose, shape, and color. That way I know what I am getting and I know that it is indeed Synthroid and not the generic.

interesting thread. i wasn't aware of herbal support for my hypothyroid. i'm 5 weeks into levoxyl and am still waiting for my labs come back in and for my body to start showing some effects! once i get my labs in though, i might start on some of the herbals. so what are the "essentials" for hypothyroidism and approximate doses? b-vitamins, e.p.o., selenium and zinc. any others i need to know about?

My naturopath and Dr say that the best oil for cooking with is coconut oil and the best to have on salads etc is virgin olive oil.
They also say that coconut fastens the matabolism (therefore good for hypo but not hyper).
Magnesium is another good supplement for thyroid and fish oil is essential.
I haven't done much research on herbal supplements for hypothyroidism, but when you are hypo you are missing an essential hormone from your body and no supplement can replace that. It's important to keep taking your thyroid hormone drug in addition to these. Just wanted to put that out there!
