Has anyone tried saw palmetto for hirsuitism? How did it affect you if yes? Any side effects? Any results?
I've tried just about everything medically speaking, and it doesn't help. I can't afford laser just yet, so I wondered if a herbal supplement might help.
I'd love to hear anyone's stories, successful or otherwise.
Hi i only started taking saw palmetto a few days ago - so no noticeable differences and no side effects as yet - i'm keeping my fingers crossed tho that it'll help - if i notice any improvement i'll let u know! i'm also taking vitex - agnus-castus- have u tried this? and have u heard of NAC - N acetyl cysteine - its mentioned on one of the other forums but ive never heard of it b4 - its supposed to be good for hirustism/preventing hair loss from head?!
also just wanted to say - congrats on the 15kg u've lost so far n i hope its still going well!

i'll have a look n let u know next week when i'm back home.
Erika:i dont really know much about NAC - i saw it mentioned by some cysters in another forum - cant remember which one now - but i found this using google : i just wondered if any1 in the uk has tried it or even heard of it!!!?
this is the link - not sure if it'll work tho: http://www.worldhealth.net/p/aadr-cysteine-n-acetyl-cysteine-nac.html
'NAC is N-acetyl cysteineCysteine, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)[u]
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid that can be manufactured in the liver. It is obtained in the diet from beans, brewer’s yeast, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, dairy products, eggs, fish, garlic, legumes, meat, nuts, onions, red peppers, seafood, seeds, soy, whey, and whole grains. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a modified form of cysteine. NAC helps the body make the antioxidant enzyme glutathione.
ROLE FOR ANTI-AGING:
Cysteine may help to diminish the effects of aging, protect against heart disease and cancer, boost the immune system, promotes metabolism of fats and production of muscle tissue, aid healing after surgery, promote hair growth, and prevent hair loss. It is also known to work synergistically with vitamin E and selenium as an antioxidant, protecting against the damaging effects of radiation, acetaldehyde, acrolein in tobacco smoke, alcohol and environmental pollutants.
Several studies have found that NAC is beneficial to patients with chronic bronchitis and angina; there is also preliminary evidence to suggest that it may help to prevent colon cancer Some experts believe that NAC increases the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs and helps to alleviate their side effects, however there is little clinical evidence to support this. Very high doses of NAC are given to patients in hospital to treat acetaminophen poisoning.
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of cysteine deficiency include: apathy, loss of pigmentation in hair, edema, lethargy, liver damage, muscle loss, skin lesions, weakness, fat loss, and slowed growth in children.
THERAPEUTIC DAILY AMOUNT:
Optimal levels of NAC and cysteine have not been determined. 250 to 1,500 mg of NAC per day has been used in clinical studies with no adverse effects.
MAXIMUM SAFE LEVEL: Not established -there are no known signs of toxicity from cysteine. NAC appears to be a very safe supplement even in high doses, however an animal study found that 60-100 times the normal dose could cause liver injury. Note: NAC is known to have antioxidant activity, however one study found that daily doses of 1.2g or more increased oxidative stress.
SIDE EFFECTS/CONTRAINDICATIONS:
People with diabetes mellitus and allergies to eggs, milk, or wheat should not take supplementary cysteine. People taking the drug may experience severe headaches when taking NAC. Cysteine supplements must be taken with vitamin C to prevent cysteine being converted to cystine, which may form kidney or bladder stones. People with kidney or liver disease should consult their doctor before taking supplementary cysteine.'
if any1 has any info on this i'd be grateful!
take care

I tried taking Saw Palmetto for about 2 weeks. It did make the hair on my head grow really fast, sometimes I could swear that I literally felt it growing. But..
It also made the hair on my chest, neck and sideburns grow in faster, darker and coarser. After that, I stopped taking Saw Palmetto. That was a few weeks ago.
Since I knew that it helped, I pierced the capsules with a safety pin and squeezed the oil into my shampoo bottle. That was about 4 days ago, no noticeable results yet.
Hey kath,
i think although NAC encourages hair growth on ur head, it also helps to reduce unwanted facial hair : check out this link: Other NAC info... http://soulcysters.net/showthread.php?t=135032
hey october sky, thanks for ur reply - i will def keep that in mind - tho i still havnt noticed any big changes as yet so i'm going to continue just taking the saw palmetto tablets for a while!

Aye caramba! I don't think I'll try it then! I don't have a problem with the hair on my head - I'm lucky enough not to be losing it. I want to get rid of the excess hair everywhere else!
Oh man, I was fixin to buy a bottle of Saw Palmetto this weekend. But I don't want to solve one problem to just create another....
It's all so frustrating isn't it?
