Cinnamon in theraputic amounts is a very powerful thing. It is possible to overdo it... and cinnamon sticks and powder should work the same, but always get the least processed form if possible. You can always grate the sticks into powder if you like.
Here's another study on Cinnamon thought you gals may like to read!
Cinnamon May Improve Glucose, Lipid Control in Type 2 Diabetics
Laurie Barclay, MD
Dec. 1, 2003 — Cinnamon may improve glucose and lipid control in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to the results of a study published in the December issue of Diabetes Care.
"Botanical products can improve glucose metabolism and the overall condition of individuals with diabetes not only by hypoglycemic effects but also by improving lipid metabolism, antioxidant status, and capillary function," write Alam Khan, MS, PhD, from NWFP Agricultural University in Peshawar, Pakistan, and colleagues. "Aqueous extracts from cinnamon have been shown to increase in vitro glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis and to increase phosphorylation of the insulin receptor; in addition, these cinnamon extracts are likely to aid in triggering the insulin cascade system."
In this study, 60 subjects with type 2 diabetes were randomized into six groups consuming 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon or the corresponding number of placebo capsules for 40 days followed by a 20-day washout period. There were 30 men and 30 women, and average age was 52.2 ± 6.32 years.
All three cinnamon groups had reductions in mean fasting serum glucose (ranging from 18%-29%), triglyceride (23%-30%), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (7%-27%), and total cholesterol (12%-26%) levels. There were no significant changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or in the placebo groups.
Study limitations include inability to determine if doses of cinnamon less than 1 g per day would also be beneficial. Possible mechanisms of the effects of cinnamon include activated glycogen synthase, increased glucose uptake, inhibited glycogen synthase kinase, activated insulin receptor kinase, inhibited dephosphorylation of the insulin receptor, or antioxidant effect.
"The maintenance of lower serum glucose and lipid levels, even when the individuals were not consuming cinnamon for 20 days, denotes sustained effects of cinnamon, indicating that cinnamon would not need to be consumed every day," the authors write. "Because cinnamon would not contribute to caloric intake, those who have type 2 diabetes or those who have elevated glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, or total cholesterol levels may benefit from the regular inclusion of cinnamon in their daily diet. In addition, cinnamon may be beneficial for the remainder of the population to prevent and control elevated glucose and blood lipid levels."
The University Grants Commission/NWFP Agricultural University in Peshawar, Pakistan, helped fund this study.
I always have cinnamon everday, and I've been doing this long before I knew that it helped with IR! I'm a cinnamon freak I've always loved cinnamon ever since I was little, and now that I've cut sugar out of my diet, I pile on the cinnamon into my hot cereals cuz it makes it taste sweet. I get at least a teaspoon a day.

For those low carbers looking for a way to get that much cinammon in daily, there is a hot cereal out that is low carb. IMO it's nasty w/o cinnamon.

Try putting cinn in juice drinks..cereal..oatmeal..yogurt.. etc... But I'll toast a slice of whole wheat bread, spray a few sprays of that calorie free liquid margerine spray, sprinkle splenda powder on it then put like a lot of cinnomen on it. .. I do that everyday unless I have oatmeal, and then I put it in that for the day.
I have used cinnamon on pork and chicken with either apple juice or orange juice. (Before knowing I was IR) I'm not sure if using the juices is a good idea now.

If anyone likes protein shakes there is one by a company called Prolab. Ask for Lean Mass Matrix in Cinnamon Oatmeal. I think it tastes great! I make pancakes out of that protein for my husband and he loves them. You could probably even add just a bit more cinnamon to it.
You can get it from GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. If you live in the LA, California area you can get it from Power Nutrition Depot (over $10 cheaper) where I get mine.
God Bless

Warning for those who are hypoglycemic like myself:
It may make your blood sugar drop too low if you take too much. I'd say sprinkle on a little with each meal rather than a huge teaspoon full at once. I did that the other day and boy was I aggitated a few hours later!!

Okay, I too want to take cinnamon capsules. I'm confused on (1) the dosage, (2) # of times per day, (3) with or without a meal, (4) websites to order it from, etc. I haven't found it in pill/capsule form locally. Please help end my confusion,
Confused but hopeful,
Linda S.

This is such great info! I just started cinnamon yesterday - so far I'm just sprinkling it on my toast. It's the tastiest of all my supplements. I'd love to hear more success stories.
sadiespetunia - did it say what the threshold was for 'large amounts' not being safe during pg?
