Red face Anyone wax their armpits, or want to?

I have gotten some odd info that you "shouldn't"- not sure why. I started a month ago and I smell so much better, plus I have a solid week of smooth armpits!

Of course being a PCOSer the hair grows back faster than a random normal woman, but I got a hot wax kit (lavendar from Sally Beauty) and the stuff is amazing. Any hair that the wax touches gets ripped out- and this was thick, wiry nasty hair. Sadly it starts to come back after one week and isn't long enough to wax again for a week after that... but I am hooked on the silky softness of the skin the days after a wax. I NEVER have skin that feels like that.

Thoughts?? Experiences?

I used to wax them, but started epilating about a month ago. I love not having those dark black roots showing under my skin. I run the epilator over it about every 3 days. I only have sparse regrowth by that time, but doing it so often helps to keep the pain factor down. It feels so much better to do it when there are only a few dozen hairs at a time. Getting it all off the first time I waxed was intensly painful!! Now I just get them a little at a time, and they stay smooth and pretty. I have been removing by wax or epilator for a few years, and there is definately less hair there than when I started.

I tried waxing my armpits once (professionally) and it was so painful! However when I bought my epilator I slowly worked on my armpits at my own pace and now they're both smooth and I just epilate the odd hair every few days and its fantastic!!!

I started waxing my legs a few years ago and now I have all these ingrown hairs. My derm said it was folliculits (sp)? It's nasty. I have pimple type things on my legs from waxing. I didn't have this problem when I was shaving.

I just recently started laser treatments and my underarms are so much better! I've had two treatments and the hair has lessened a lot. I highly recommend laser if you can afford it. It's totally worth the money.

I recommend doing it professionally the first time. I did it myself and succeeded in ripping off more skin than hair, so I went to the salon to have it done professional. It didn't really hurt, as far as pain goes. It did sting a bit though.

I had mine done professionally a few times and it was great not to have to shave! I loved not having a 5 o'clock shadow under there all of the time! I have been wanting to start getting it done again, but haven't gotten around to it. I do have the Sally Hanasen lavendar wax and I love it - I use it on my stomach and arms.

I never heard anything bad or any reason you shouldn't wax your underarms, but would be interested to find out if there is a reason not to and why...It just seems to have so many great benefits!

I think the main reason why it isn't recommended is because (in most women), the skin is loose there, and in order to get a good wax, you have to pull the skin taught... not an easy feat doing armpits by yourself.

i dont only wax my underarms, but i get my whole body done including brazilian. its amazing! makes my body silky smooth. and since i started to take met. glucophage, i feel my body becomes way smoother than it was ever b4.

after getting waxed few times, u become used to the pain. if someone out there want to wax but dont cuz of pain, then in sensitive places like under arms or the brazilian area baby teething jell helps reduce pain. aply atleast 10 mins b4 waxing. it is really gona help numb the area. and after waxed, petrolium jelly helps sooths n prevents pain from coming back, so apply lots of it specially in brazilian area, u will be silky smooth and pain free, n DH is gona see u as a movie star...lol

Yeah, you feel amazing when all the hair is removed, esp. Brazilian. I had my armpits waxed professionally though, in Greece, and she was terrible at it! So bad it made me bleed and hurt for days afterwards. Now I self-epilate - it's quick and cheap, and even if it hurts the first time, it's worth it.

I've been doing my armpits at home for years -- the biggest issue is that you have to let it grow in first, but once it starts to grow back, it doesn't take that long and you just wear sleeves for a few days. You need one of the good hot waxes, like Surgiwax. I find that when I've done it, I get about a good week or two of smooth armpits, except that sometimes I have to tweeze/shave a few hairs that hadn't been long enough to come out when I did the wax.

Of all the things to wax at home, I find the lip and the armpits the easiest. The bikini line, no way -- that's for the professionals.

My sister tried it once when she was a teenager, and still winces when someone brings it up. I believe her words were NEVER AGAIN.

I think it all comes down to your pain tolerance, and exactly how sensitive your skin is. It's something I'd leave to a professional (at least the first time) so that you know how it feels to have it done properly before taking a whack at it yourself.

with me, i can only do my arms, under arms myself. i only do my face if it really needs to be waxed, but i m not so good at waxing my face cuz of the angle of my own hands on my face..

Personally, im not good either at waxing my own face. I got this wax from Sally's a wax my cousin uses who recommended it to me. I didnt like it that much. Im not that happy by it. But when i waxed my face myself i ripped of my skin in a few places by doing it again and again but having my mom do it for me my skin was fine. I b4 that one try use to get it done professionally. But i guess doing it again and again you get used to it, and learn better ways of doing it on your own. By since coming on this website ive heard so much about the Surgiwax, i really really wana try it now. Is it really That GOOD???? Any views??

On the Surgiwax -- if you have the guts and ability to use it properly, I have found it works the best -- it's hot and the consistency is pretty thick so it grabs. It's also pretty cheap. I use it on the face and on the underarms. If I had the patience I'd use it on the arms and legs. However, because my thighs are jiggly and loose and it's rather sticky, I have no ability to use it on my bikini line. Cold waxes and premade strips I have found extremely useless. The only other thing that worked that well was the warm sugaring stuff from Body Shop, which required cloth strips which were a pain in the neck to wash and expensive to buy if you wanted to make them disposable, and the BS stopped making it.

Another no-no according to the directions but I find that it works very well, is for the underarms I reuse the wax. I have a tub for the underarms, and once I've taken off the wax, I shove it back into the container and reuse it the next time. Yes, there are little hairs floating in there but it also gives the wax more thickness and makes it easier to put one big fat strip that you can grab on to and rip off. After a while I get a new tub, which I find harder to work with the first time or two. For the underarms, my advice is you need to do each one at least twice. Once pulling from the bottom to the top, and once from the top to bottom. Then you take a look to see if there are little patches that you missed.

For the face you always want to use fresh, unused wax, and run some ice over the area before and after, as well as some kind of after-waxing oil. I do sometimes get a few reaction zits on the eyebrow and chin/neck area, but they go away in a day or so and it's much easier than the tweezers. While I've been pregnant, I occasionally have done some on the worst parts of my face, since I can't bleach at the moment, but that I don't do so much.
