Default Appointment with Consultant

Hiya Everyone, Just thought I would give you an update.

I went to see the consultant today at the hospital and it went ok. He said he was happy for me to be on 1000mg Met a day rather than 1500mg (that was making me sick).

I asked about my periods - I have only had 2 since my DS was born and that was nearly 16 months ago. He said as soon as I lose some more weight I would get regular periods. He said I had a BMI of 36 - whats that about?!!??!?! I was 15 stone 9lbs in Oct 01 and I am 15 stone and a bit now (before xmas I got down to 14 stone). He wants me to be at least 13 stone - I want to get to 12 - hopefully! I am on the Slimming World Diet at the moment - red days only! Why is everything down to your weight...........

<Paitent>...... "Oh doctor, I have an Ingrown Toenail"
<Doctor>........"Oh well if you lose a bit of weight, that would help"

Gets on my nerves!!!

Anyway still no period - I will keep you posted!!

Babydust to all who are TTC!

Take care love Nat

BMI - body mass index. Mine is 30.4 at the last calculation - there's sites on the web where you can work out. Above 30 is classified as obese. 25-30 is overweight, 20 is ideal.

I've lost about 1 - 1.25 stone so far. Mostly thanks to the Metformin and not eating for 5 days due to acute tonsilitis (not a method I'd recommend!)

The Metformin makes me quite nauseous too. Its hard becuase I never know what I can face eating and it often leads me to eat the wrong things which acts like a vicious circle.

Perhaps you could try a month on 1000mg and then try stepping up to 1500 mg. I'd also recommend reducing your carb intake and trying to eat good carbs when you do eat them - even if you can't do Atkins or the other diets, just cutting down on sugars can help. I used to eat a lot of pasta or rice dishes, now its grilled meat plus green veg and salad for most meals. At least these days with the bagged supermarket salads its a bit more interesting. For a treat, I'll have some really nice green veg like asparagus - mmmm....

A new thing too for me is work lunches - I couldn't face sandwiches but this left me not knowing what to eat - now I make my own greek salad every day

I've heard that even a relatively small amount of weightloss can help kickstart your periods again.

I seem to have waffled on a bit, sorry!

Emma

BMI 20-25 is considered ideal. Anything under 20 is considered underweight!

To calculate your BMI:

your weight in KG divided by the square of your height in metres.

An example:

I weigh 75.5 KG
I am 1.70 metres tall (5'7'')

so 75.5/ (1.7 x 1.7)
= 75.5 / 2.89
= BMI of 26.1

If i want to aim for a BMI of 25 (top of the "normal" range) I would need to weigh:

25 (desired BMI) x 2.89(square of my height in metres) = 72.25 KG
so I need to lose 3.25 KG

But don't get in a panic if you do this sum and it seems like you have an impossible amount of weight to lose...you certainly do NOT need to have a BMI as low as 25 in order to conceive! As previously said, ANY amount of weight lost is a help. Periods / ovulation are often restored after a relatively small amount of weight loss. Don't set yourself unrealistic targets. I think the "I want to fit into my trousers" approach is a much better idea, much better than weighing yourself twice a day and getting depressed by every little fluctuation!
