Question Appropriate treatment?

Hey girls...

I have my dreaded annual exam tomorrow and was just wanting to throw this question out there to you all....what is typical treatment for a thin cyster who is not trying to conceive?

I feel like my MD threw me on BCP's and never thought about it again. He says that the BCP's "hijack my ovaries" shutting them down so that there should be no other hormone problems... But, isn't the IR the problem? The thing that CAUSES my ovaries to screw up? So the pill prevents my ovaries from screwing up, but aren't there other problems caused by the hyperinsulimia that results from IR?

I know my cholesterol is crazy high, and with PCOS I'm already at risk for heart disease because of that. But my GP doesn't treat my cholesterol because I'm only 28, the OB/Gyn, doesn't address the cause of my hormone stuff because the BCP suppresses my obvious symptoms, and 95% of the research is geared toward overweight cysters.

So I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm being treated appropriately. I'd prefer not to wait until I have problems from this goofy hormone crap...

your thoughts?

Sorry, i don't have an answer yet, but I plan on discussing it with my doctor at the next visit. I don't like taking BCP as I feel like it increases my migraines. I am trying to conceive currently, but I have wondered the same thing. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I'm wondering the same too.. I'm not Insulin resistant, don't have weight problems, and am not trying to concieve. So all I really take for PCOS is Birth Control. I feel like I'm missing out on something that I should be taking. I mean aren't there lots of treatment options out there? My endocrine was a moron so I'm looking for a new one. Let me know if you get an answer.

Thumbs up Update for psyrn79

Guess what? Update already since my last reply to your thread psyrn79! I am trying to answer your question. I had an appointment today with a regular doctor who deals with women's issues. I was so frustrated after dealing with my endocrin this week that I thought this would be another flop too.

Well I asked her what things I should be on for the PCOS and explained what the endocrin had said.

She goes "Why don't they have you on Metformin?? Even in you aren't completely IR you should at least try a low dose of Metformin because PCOS is based on Insulin Problems even if they are too small to come up on tests.

I guess it all comes down to what the docs believe about PCOS. Some think that PCOS is based on an IR problem whether tests are showing it or not. And some think if you don't have weight problems them you don't need other meds.

I think I'm going to agree with the reg doc because she seems alot more experienced, and kinder - like she actually cares and wants to help.

And I wonder if we thin cysters may be only slightly insulin resistant right now but are progressively getting worse over time.

So I'm gonna add Metformin.

I hated being on BCP's and might check to see if I can stay on met after this pregnancy too. We'll see. Thanks for updating. I had canceled that appointment before, so I never got an answer.
