I just got a letter in the mail letting me know that I have my first appointment with the Endo on July 5th. What exactly does an Endo do. Can he help with Pcos and is it possible that he will up my met dosage? I have been trying to have my reg Dr up my dosage but she wont do it. i am only taking 500mg per day and I think I need to be taking more.
Anyway, if anyone can inform me on what to expect at the endo, it would be a great help.
Julie- I went to see a regular endo and that is who actually diagnosed me with PCOS and gave me the initial Rx for Met. I am not sure what all Endo's do but mine works with people with diabeties andPCOS- I am sure he does more than that but that is the part of his practice I am familiar with. GL!

An endocrinologist focuses their practice on metabolic disorders. As such, tt seems most people find that an endo is the kind of doc that is in a position to be aware of PCOS and is aware of the treatments. Not that other docs can't help. Many PCOSers find their gyno's or general practitioners are helpful. It doesn't really matter what kind of doc, as long as they know about PCOS and how to treat it. Many docs aren't. My gyno told me i might have it, but not to worry, just take birthcontrol until i wanted to have kids and then we might need to take some medications. In fact, I know now that the BC just masks my symptoms and that the IR needs to be treated. But she didnt' tell me these things. It was my own reasearch which taught me that PCOSers are at greater risk for diabetes and heart disease and that lead me to finding my endo who is now treating my PCOS properly.
Endos differ, but most will sit down and have a long talk about family history and your medical history. Mine did a short physical exam looking for symptoms that could have meant a dx other than PCOS. SHe also drew lots of blood. If I were you, I'd make a list of all your questions so you don't forget anything - that's always my problem!! Good luck!!
