After months and months of waiting to hear back from the FAA on my flight medical, I finally got a letter yesterday. They've reviewed an inch-thick stack of medical records and have concluded that I can be issued a medical certificate, but it's a provisional certificate good for no more than one year (normal is three years). The reason? They saw my list of medications and assume that I have diabetes! So it's now in my record that I have diabetes, which is absolutely untrue -- the word doesn't even appear in any of my medical history!
So now I need to appeal this decision and get the record straight, otherwise this so-called diagnosis will haunt me. It's bad enough my insurance company saw the prescription for Met and sent me a pile of literature on diabetes... or that the ER physician who saw me for a burn assumed that I was a diabetic and began to advise me on how I should care for it as such. But now I'm looking at difficulties getting hired as a flight instructor because of my medical status. Grrrrrr...
Ah well. Thanks for listening to me vent... I really just want to go throttle someone right about now...
Just a couple of months ago, I was getting info on health insurance plans for myself. I asked the broker/guy who was giving me advice on plans about met - I told him it's a diabetes medication but also used to treat pcos. And it was news to him, since they have not made the distinction, so I went with the more expensive plan that would cover it to avoid problems. I hope it works out for you, deffinitely appeal.
Sorry this is happening to you cyster! Many times in the ER the docs would assume I had diabetes (I didn't have it yet then!) just because I was on met. I actually had a couple ER docs that said I have to have diabetes to be on met. I found that funny and sad at the same time. So many docs who don't know much about PCOS.
I hope everything gets worked out soon cyster
Hugs
Jenny

I know what you mean... my insurance company has asked my doctor to request a certain blood test every time I have bloodwork because I take Met. Even when I go to a doctor for something else the nurse says, "oh you're diabetic?" and I say NO and have to explain.
Sorry you are going through all this,
Tori

Thanks for the words of support -- it's SO discouraging after all of this waiting to have them make a stupid assumption that keeps me from doing what I want to do after all. At least I'll be able to fly in the meantime, though, and maybe -- just maybe -- I can bring some awareness to the FAA about PCOS while I'm at it!
