Default Armour vs. Synthroid

Ok ladies,

Those of you who are taking armour, did you ever take synthroid (or any of it's equals)? What do you think of armour? How difficult was it for you to get armour?

I've been on levothyroxine the entire time I've been treated, but knowing what I know, I think that armour might be better. As a science student, I find it very difficult to believe that just T4 will solve my thyroid problem since we all know that a healthy functioning thyroid produces more than just T4. If our bodies are supposed to produce more than just T4, than obviously those hormones are important so replacing them all would be smarter than just T4, kwim?

What do you all think?

Many hypo patients do feel better on Armour, but some feel better on Synthroid. Most docs will tell you that taking T3 isn't necessary because the body converts T4 to T3. Many docs will also tell you that T3 meds aren't as stable as T4, and that there is too much inconsistency between Armour pills, and will resist prescribing it.

However, there are many people who do not convert well, so the additional T3 is necessary. Have you had recent tests for your free T4 and free T3? That along with how you feel should be the determining factor.

Here is a link to an article that might help give you info to take to your doc to try and convince him/her to prescribe Armour:

Also, here is a link to the Armour website "Find a Doc Near You" page to help you find a doc who does prescribe it:

Good luck!
Linda

I found a FABULOUS traditional MD that also knows about and "allows" natural remedies. He did start me out on synthetic but I insisted that I eventually be switched over to armour. I was on synthetic for 8 weeks and tests showed I was not converting T4.
He then had me on syn in the morning and armour in the evening. He is allowing me a great deal of choice in this matter. I am now on all armour and feel much better. The syn did very little for me. While the armour is not as "exact" in dosage it is natural. I was really worried about being on syn thryroid because all side effects list hair loss and I have already thinned enough. While the armour lists very few if any side effects. We have been monitoring my tsh,t3,t4 levels but he has not been medicating me according to my blood tests, but as to how I feel, how much weight loss, etc. This is the first time that I feel a Dr has allowed me to be in on treating myself. I found him on Top Docs. If your Dr wont "let" you take something different than you are taking maybe its time to switch. I had 5 drs tell me my thyroid was "normal" yet I felt horrible for a little over 2 years. I found this angel from above that LISTENED to ME. The thing to remember is that you live in your body and know how you feel. Not the Dr.'s
