I did a cycle of Letrozole about a year ago. It did cause ovulation (I was NOT ovulating before) but don't know if it would've gotten bfp, I still had IUD at the time and the test-O was just to rule out the big C. Much later, when ttc, I did a round of Clomid. I did O but not on the timing of the Clomid. So I don't think Clomid worked.
Personally, I liked the Letrozole better. I didn't have hot flashes on it, and I had more energy. Actually, I felt wonderful, creative & focused, and my hair grew sooo fast that month.
*sometimes* the insurance will pay Letrozole, when they won't pay Clomid...depends. If not, the Letrozole is more expensive I think.
