Article: Acne Health Risk Warning Acne health risk warning
By Nino Williams
Scientists working towards a preventative cure for acne have said the disease could be linked to a condition that causes heart disease and infertility.
Researchers at the universities of Leeds and Buckingham have been using the expertise of Tooting's St George's Hospital in their work.
They now hope to persuade the Department of Health to fund further research, which involves using a virus found naturally on the skin to target acne.
Their studies have included the work of Dr Geeta Nargund, St George's consultant in reproductive medicine, who warns a high proportion of women suffering from acne also have polycycstic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
A recent study suggested up to 37 per cent of women with acne also had PCOS, which if not treated can lead to diabetes, cardiac problems, and even infertility.
Dr Nargund said: "If we have girls with acne it is important to find out if it is linked with other symptoms.
"We give them a consultation and if there is a family history we have to take it seriously because it has long term implications. Public education is the key."
Studies into PCOS have found a particularly high level among Asian women, and the hospital is keen to spread the public awareness message to Wandsworth's large Asian population. It now holds weekly meetings where women can go for confidential support and advice.
