Default asking for Met

hi girls i was just wondering, i just got DX in march and my gyn put me on yaz and she said something about met but didnt know wether to put me on it or not because my insulin level was elevated and wanted me to get tested for diabetes first but i have an appointment with her friday and not with my pcp till may17! (the earliest i could get in) i was really hoping to try met out but i guess what im asking is....can i ask her to start me on it or do i have to be tested for diabetes first?

thanks

You don't need to have diabetes to take met. Many cysters (or even most of us?) who take met are not diabetic. It's often prescribed to prevent diabetes and to control other PCOS symptoms.

You should probably get tested for your own safety though!

Thumbs up

The best thing for you to do, is do A LOT of research, go to your doctors appointment as informed as you can be, know the poss side effects, the pros and cons of the medication. Google metformin and treatment for PCOS, if your doctor isnt updated on newer treatments he may not know the advantages of taking met. If possible even take print out of questions you might have and information that is interesting to you. My previous Obgyn, did nothing for my pcos, I had it the whole time I was under her care(almost 20 years) till a friend of myne told me about metformin, I did research and found out that a lot of my symptoms could possibly have been avoided if I had been being treated all along, I took this information to my pcp, and she ordered a lot of test(no diabetic test) I had a heart stress test, hormone level test, cholesterol test, and so on, Thankfully My heart is fine, my cholesterol was elevated and I had been on High Blood Pressure meds. I have ony been on met since December and Already i am seeing results. High Blood Pressure is controlled, no more high blood pressure meds! Cholesterol came down... no more meds. Met has not regulated my periods but it has lowered my hormone levels to almost Normal! YAHOO!

This is a great site to get info from; and you would be suprised at how many other sites have some really great info about using met as treatment for PCOS.

Best Wishes!

P.S. Metformin does not lower your blood sugar, it only reduces the amount of insulin your body produces. My doctor ordered my a sugar machine to check my sugars and they have been normal.

If your insulin level is higher than normal, it is a possible indicator for Insulin Resistance, which Met does help with. Insulin Resistance is a precursor for diabetes, meaning if the IR is not treated properly it could develop into diabetes.

Depending on how recent your labs were, they may want to re-test the fasting insulin and also get a current fasting blood glucose test.

You could bring up the topic that you don't want to be on BCP's because you are getting married (congratulations!!) and looking forward to having kids, so you want to discuss what are your other options besides BCP's.
