I am on 1250 mg a day of met, working my way up to 1500. I haev noticed that sometimes I have kind of a mild asthma for a couple weeks. I don't know if it is really a kind of asthma or not. Does anyone know anything about this? It's not major, but I do notice it. Should I call my doctor?

I do recall reading that as a side effect when first taking the med.
It could also lead into a sinus infection or flu like symptoms.
If it is still bothering you or if you feel it is effecting your breathing too much then yes you need to contact your dR.
I had something like that and I let it go, next thing I realized is I developed anxiety attacks. I don't know if it had anything to do with the med or if it just came about on its own, but I had never had an attack before starting GlucXR.
Try to keep track of this sort of thing.
Write it down and date it.
Some of the things I started putting together happened along the same time as starting the Gluc.(Nov2001)
It has taken me this long to figure it out.
I thought I was getting asthma,I was having trouble breathing and then I was having chest pains. This was the begenning of my anxiety attacks in Jan 2002,
I am still taking 1500mg GlucXR.
Good Luck,
Patty

These have been the worse(Most painful)
At least I know what it is so I didn't freak.
Last time I thought I was having a heart attack.
So now I don't worry as much.
I have an appt on Wed, so I'll cover it then.
Good Hunting on your end!

Please let us know what your doc says…I was asthmatic as a teenager and have recently had a flare-up. I’m not sure if it’s connected to the Met but would love to know!
I have had chronic asthma my whole life and I did not notice a change either way once I started the met. I have been on met for over a year now, and my asthma has been (generally speaking) under control with maintenance meds for years now.
I never noticed anything in the fine print about a metformin/asthma interaction, nor has my doctor ever mentioned it to me, but hey, I guess you never know.

Some are luckier than others...A little more info.
I couldn't find the other site with the ashma info.
It basicly refered to cold and flu like symptoms which can trigger asthma attacks.
This is part of the printed insert available on line on the GlucophageXR site.
So yes it can effect or trigger asthma patients.
* Reactions that were more common in GLUCOPHAGE- than placebo-treated patients.
Diarrhea led to discontinuation of study medication in 6% of patients treated with GLUCOPHAGE.
Additionally, the following adverse reactions were reported in ¡Ý1.0-¡Ü5.0% of GLUCOPHAGE
patients and were more commonly reported with GLUCOPHAGE than placebo: abnormal stools,
Hmmm...guess I'm just lucky then. Thankfully- my asthma has never been affected by the met- that sure would suck.
