I myself am an Atheist. I'm not looking to be converted (I am quite happy being an Atheist), nor am I here to bring anyone's faith down. I'm just curious about what people of faith here actually think about Atheists. I hear comments all the time (not here per say) about how Atheists shouldn't run for public office, or that we're bad people. It especially hurts me personally when I see things like this:
That ad actually made me tear up when I saw it. Imagine if they were talking about Kay Hagan attending an African American organization, in this tone, instead of an Atheist one. How offended and hurt would you be? Why do so many Christians have it out for us? I guess they think of Atheists as a threat, but most of us just mind our business and simply want to live our lives like everyone else. I am a good and moral person without a God. I love my family, and I love people in general. Why are people so intolerant? Why do people still look down on me? I just want to start an honest civilized dialogue here.
Why are people so intolerant? Why do people still look down on me?
Anyone could ask these questions -- Muslims, Jews, Hindus...
I think you know what most major (monotheistic) religions think of Atheism. Islamically speaking, you will ultimately be judged by God, and regardless of your claim to be an Atheist, it will be His decision to measure the contents of your heart, morals, beliefs, and so on.
I haven't put much thought into your other questions about what part Atheists should have in society. Just as I don't generally think of people in groups that way. As long as you are a law-abiding citizen who gives back to her community, I don't have a care for what your personal beliefs/practices are.
I know what it is like to be on the receiving end of discrimination. I know how hurtful it can be to realize the hate that some people harbour for others who are different. All you can do is continue living the best way you know how to, and forget about the rest - because if they are busy judging you, they certainly aren't paying much attention to their own "faith." They should be the ones worried about their fate if you ask me.

My brother is an atheist and we get along great. Nothing has changed between us. We agree to disagree on this point. I don't think any worse of people because of their religion. It has to do with their actions and behaviors.

Unfortunately, you'll find ignorance in ALL religions. I can't speak for all Christians, but as a Christian, I can say I don't hate and/or feel threatened by Atheists as a religious group. However, with that being said, I am uncomfortable by those (NOT only atheists, but those of ALL other religions) who try to force their beliefs or way of life on others.
To me, religion is a very private thing. It's not something to be out in the streets screaming out, or telling people that they're going to hell for this or that, or that there is no God, ect. It's all unnecessary to me. I believe in live and let live. I may not agree with what someone else believes, but I'll be damned if I'm going to stand in judgment of them-- it's not my place.

That commercial is so ignorant. I don't identify with any religion, but I'm not an atheist, and I can't stand it when someone is judged based on what their beliefs are.

I really do think it is ignorant how people treat others. As a christian I am not called to convince you to believe what I believe. I am called to love everyone no matter what. So it is upsetting when I see how you and others are treated for believing differently.
