I was just diagnosed with PCOS with insulin resistance. I'm 100lbs overweight. My doctor right away said to go on the Atkins diet. There were no other alternatives in his mind.
I've been researching the diet online for the last couple of days along with PCOS and have heard basically nothing good about the diet and haven't found it anywhere as a treatment of PCOS.
Could someone tell me if they have tried the diet and had any success? Or, give me some other guidelines on losing weight?
Thanks,
Rhonda
I'm currently on Weight Watchers. This plans allows you to lose the weight at a healthy pace. There is an amazing thread dedicated to diet and exercise and the women in there are sooo supportive! Hopefully you find something that suits your needs. Oh and the reason I love weight watchers is, I feel like I am NOT dieting .

I think with atkins, like any diet, you need to try it to find out if it will work for you. A lot of cysters have success with low carb, but I know that the IR diet is more popular because you do get to eat a small amount of carbs. Whatever you choose stick with it for a few weeks because some of us lose weight slow and you won't get as frustrated if you keep that in mind. Good luck

I like Atkins, but I don't believe in one-size-fits-all. My suggestion is to give it a try for at least a few months and see how it works for you. There are a multitude of alternatives out there, even in just the low carb catagory. I strongly suggest low carb for women with PCOS and my RE does as well. Based on the online research I've done, it's one of the main recommended treatment options. That said, what works for even "most" people, doesn't do the trick for everyone. Good Luck!
I think Atkins can be a good choice. It takes a lot of discipline, but it also helps get rid of cravings. However, I just cannot stay on it for more than a month or so! I really don't like being bread and rice free. I can handle eating a small amount of rice like 1/2 a cup, but I hate to totally do without. There are Atkins substitutes for bread, potatoes, and rice, but I haven't been too impressed by them.
I think the reason Atkins has a bad rap in some circles is that some Atkins followers eat six eggs at a time, or a pound of bacon a day, or some other extreme. But when I ate Atkins, I'd have a couple eggs and strawberries for breakfast, a big green salad with hardboiled egg and real salad dressing for lunch, and something like a marinated chicken breast or small sirloin steak with a ton of grilled veggies for dinner. Pretty healthy IMO.
I followed Atkins during pregnancy. Imagine the funny looks I got when I shared this little tid bit. I wasn't following Induction. I ate healthier than any mom I know IRL. I had more veggies, more low glycemic fruits, etc. Just b/c it's labeled a diet, doesn't mean it's bad.
Having done Atkins myself, may I suggest the Insulin Resistant Diet, instead. I think you'll find it's far more balanced than Atkins and was created just for people with our condition - insulin resistance.

Well, it was certainly worth it for you! Jamie is just perfect. (As you know!)
I truly think Atkins is probably the best way for me to eat...I just don't think I have it in me, though. I am a baker at heart.
That's why I bought the book 500 Low-Carb Recipes. I can make cakes, muffins, pies, etc. One year I made Thanksgiving dinner complete with stuffing and pumpkin pie, all low carb, and nobody knew the difference!! They all went back for 2nd and 3rd helpings. After the meal was done and everyone was finished talking about how good it was, I told them it was low carb.

No way, for real? I just may have to give it another shot.
I bought it on Amazon. I got the stuffing recipe from either the Atkins site or the www.lowcarbluxury.com. I can't remember. Lowcarbluxury is one of my favorite sites. My absolute favorite dish is the cheesy chicken cassarole. The cheese required in the dish is kind of hard to find around here, though, so I don't get to make it much. It's one of those really special treat meals for me.
