How did you learn to eat, knowing that you had diabetes? Was it very difficult for you, going shopping? Finding something to snack on? The doc just put me on a diabetic 1300 calorie low fat, low carb diet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Robin

Hi Robin. I won't lie to you; I had a hard time too in the beginning. The most important thing for a diabetic is small quantities, eating more meals through the day, instead of one or two big ones, and eating a balance of vegetables, fruits, meat, starches (carbs) and fats. Your dr should have a nutritional guide to give you or suggest a dietician.

I spend more time in the stores these days reading labels. You have to learn how to read the nutritional portion of products and recognize how many portions per fat and carbs the item contains. The easiest way to learn how many carbs are in something is to know that 15% is equal to 1 total carb. If the product contains the total carb of 30 and there are 2 servings, 1 serving is 15 or 1 carb. As for snacks it depends on what time of the day you have a snack and how many carbs you are allowed. My hardest thing was learning to eat more veggies and fruit. I also stopped using regular sugr and have been using Splenda for everything.

There are also some really great Diabetic books out there right now that can really help you understand the whole balance thing.

I hope I have been helpful. Good luck.

Wink Thanks for the info

I appreciate you replying. I guess I have just got to go for it and quit whining about what I have to do. It has been really hard with the diet thing. I guess I have got to put more effort into it and become more educated. Thanks Robin
