Read the article. It touches on the obese vs thin issue. Too many doctors focus on obesity, however, it's not really an accurate 'marker' for diabetes (similar to PCOS - obesity isn't anything doctors should consider in making a PCOS diagnosis)
Wow, this is exactly what happened to me. I'm a slim petite size four and was just diagnosed with PCOS. I went to a endocrinologists who basically thought I was crazy to think that I had any hormonal issues. My periods were okay in terms of regularity (skipped sometimes)but I always felt that there was something 'wrong' with me, I just didn't know what. It wasn't until my new endocrinologist ordered a pelvic ultrasound and saw the many cysts I had, my elevated cholesterol, my hirsutism, and discovered the history of diabetes in my family that he came to his conclusion.
Thanks so much for posting the link to that article.
I'll h ave to read the articles, but i have great blood pressure, awsome cholesterol and still have an insulin resistance. I was checked for these things for over a year before finally being given the pcos dx....
The fact that more and more research links diabetes to pcos scares me! My dad has diabetes and my mother has high blood pressure... I don't want either, but I do feel doomed at times being that I am overweight and have pcos... The more I read articles like this, the more an alarm sets off for me... I must make changes!

They're teaching medical students about this link in some universities these days - it's lucky that news can travel fast(ish!) in the medical world. I was first put on the road to a diagnosis of PCOS when my GP made the link between my raised fasting glucose and my acne, so it shows the information is now getting through, at least to the switched-on medical professionals.

Wow, you're really fortunate to be in the care of such a 'switched on' GP. That's awesome.
I was lucky, too, that my gp connected all the dots, right away, too.

I have a fairly significant family history of type two diabetes in my dad's family but I am the only one with PCOS or any symptoms and that's with my dad having 4 sisters who have many daughters and having my own sister. There are no fertility problems in the family besides mine but there is plenty of weight problems and diabetes. Why do only I get stuck with PCOS? My mom is a large woman but her only weight related issue is arthritis in her knees.
I wish my doctor had diagnosed my pcos before my blood sugar problems began. My blood sugar can go anywhere from 50 to 145 in a day for no real apparent reason. The blood sugar issues are what led him to the pcos diagnosis and that's the newest problem that's only manifested itself in the last year or so. He ignored the other symptoms for a long time.
