Just lookin' for some personal stories on this medicaton... anyone take it and had any success with it? Was thinking about trying it after i have the baby... My girlfriend is on it and it has helped her lose 55 lbs....
Let me know if anyone likes/dislikes it.
thanks
I have never taken avandamet because it is a combo of avandia and metformin. Metformin never worked for me and it had terrible side effects, but I did take Avandia and it is wonderful! It got my hormone levels back within the normal range, I started having regular periods, and I even got pregnant with it and the help of clomid. I would recommend avandia to anyone who has had problems with met!

I was prescribed Avandamet mid November, so I'm almost through with my first month. I will say that I noticed the beginning symptoms of AF today... I haven't had it since September when they took me of Yasmin to run blood test. So if AF stops by for a visit, I will be extremely excited. Other than that, I haven't had to many ill effects from it. My stomach did become VERY sensitive when I upped the dose from 1 pill to 2. Unfortunately that happened around Thanksgiving and I couldn't stand to even LOOK at the Turkey. It completely turned my stomach. I had no problems with the ham, though... :p
I started the IR diet last week (okay, I'm not exactly following it to the 'T' yet, but I'm getting there) and I noticed that it greatly reduced the small stomach irritation that I was having. I went off of it one day this week, and the stomach irritation was back. Now, I know what everyone was saying about low carbing while taking met.
If you should start it, let me know how you like it. The research that I read on it appeared to show that the combination of the drugs working together increased the desired results over just taking met or avandia alone.

ok.. thanks.. maybe i'll try the avandia.. cause i was on glucophage and isn't that kinda like met? it made me awfully sick..
I do some research on avandia then..
Not a doctor, but from the research I've seen, glucophage and metformin are the same. However, they appear to effect people differently. Some who were on gluc had side symptoms, but didn't on met and vice versa. Gluc and Met work through your liver and help to control the production of insulin.
Avandia is different and works on your muscles to help them better use the insulin your body produces.
I believe this is why we've started seeing an increase in the prescriptions for Avandamet which is a comination of Avandia and Metformin at a lower met dose. (Not to mention the fact that research lately has been showing that a combination of the two shows better results then just using one or the other.)

Fawn:
Well my doctor had me stop taking the Avandia while I'm pregnant. But, I was taking Avandia 8mg/day and started my first round of clomid and I got pregnant. The only other meds I was taking were for my High blood pressure.

re: gluc/met - they are the same. Metformin is the generic name for Glucophage (like acetominophin is the generic name for Tylenol.) So they should affect you exactly the same. One caveat - some people find the generics don't work with this drug. Not all generics are created equal. They can have different fillers and binders which may make the drug work differently, even though the active ingredient is the same. Also I have read in various sources that with a generic, the actual content of the active ingredient can vary from 80% to 120% so you may actually be getting a stronger or weaker formulation that with the name brand. I don't know how true that is - doesn't make much sense to me.
I did find met/gluc stopped working for me when I switched from name brand to generic - but it may have been coincidence because when i switched back to name brand, it never did start to work again for me. I think I may have just happened to become resistant at just that point in time.
Avandia (and actos) do work on the muscles. I don't recall the specifics... but gluc works to reduce how much glucose the liver releases into the blood stream, thereby reducing how much insulin your body produces (and also perhaps thereby causing the stomach upset some experince... if you eat a lot of carbs and your liver can only release so much sugar into your blood, your body has to dump the excess somewhere... and out your butt is a pretty easy place. ) Avandia OTOH somehow works to directly improve insulin use by the muscles.
I have read that avandia (and actos) can cause weight gain in some people... so I have always been scared of it. My first endo suggested I try it when met alone wasn't making my periods QUITE right... but I balked. Now I am hoping the new doc I will see in Janurary will let me try it... I'm willing to give it a shot. So sick of PCOS, I'm about willing to try anything at just about any risk. (We've moved which is why i can't just have my first doc prescribe it...)

I am on Avandamet. I have been taking it for a year now. At first it worked wonders my testosterone went from 96 to 44 within a month. However, now a year later it is at 76. So I am waiting a month to recheck it. Doesn't seem to be working I am not sure what my doc wants to do. A few months after taking Avandamet I visited my general doctor and when I told him I was on it, he told me that he prefers Glucophage because Avandamet can cause weight gain. I did suffer side effects from it in the beginning: major diarrhea. Hope this helps.
It is okay I guess when it works.
