Default Avandia

Avandia has been linked to serious health complications. If you have
been taking Avandia or have taken it in the past, you might want more
info. Please visit our website for more information.

http://www.barwhite.com/avandia/

The following information and more is available in an easier to read
format at the link above.

A new study on the drug Avandia released by the New England Journal
notes major health implications for diabetic patients.

The study shows data from 42 studies involving 15,560 patients who took
the drug and 12,283 patients who were given other medications or a
placebo. According to this new study it was noted that patients getting
Avandia were 43 percent more likely to have a heart attack.

A comment was made by Mr. Steven Nissen, the chairman of cardiology at
the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. ``Unfortunately, rosiglitazone appears to
increase, rather than decrease, the most serious complication of
diabetes, heart disease.''

Older studies in the U.S. have shown a total of 158 heart attacks and
61 deaths from cardiovascular causes among the patients in the studies,
which generally lasted from six months to a year.

In December 2005, GlaxoSmithKline and FDA alerted healthcare
professionals to new information regarding the potential of serious and
potentially life-threatening side effects of the popular diabetes mellitus type
2 treating drug Avandia. Avandia is an oral treatment intended to
control blood sugar levels that almost 5.3 million people have used since it
was approved in 1999.

Avandia Heart Failure or Damage:

The are a number of serious potential Avandia injury risks associated
with this diabetes drug. Most of them affect the cardiovascular system
and include:

Heart Failure or Damage
Heart Valve disease
Edema
Blood Artery disease
Heart attack

In fact, a study published by the Mayo Clinic in September 2003 reveled
six people developed congestive heart failure in diabetic patients
under Avandia treatment. These six men between 66 and 78 years of age all
had type 2 diabetes and required emergency treatment. Congestive heart
failure is a potentially fatal cardiac condition that occurs because
the heart muscle cannot pump sufficient blood through the circulatory
system, which causes fluid to build up in the lungs.

Other Avandia side effects may include:

Avandia is also linked to reports of diabetic macular edema, a swelling
of the retina that can interfere with vision. Many patients with
diabetic macular edema often complain of blurry or distorted vision, and
many of these victims experienced associated Avandia side effects of
ankle, leg, and feet swelling.

If you or someone you love was injured by this dangerous drug, you need
to contact an Avandia diabetes drug attorney right away. You may be
entitled to financial compensation for your Avandia heart attack, heart
valve disease, edema, blood artery disease, or primary pulmonary
hypertension, but if you hesitate in contacting a PPH attorney you could miss
your chance for restitution. Contact our Avandia heart failure lawyers
today.

We have known that in the UK for around 9 months.... I am still taking it, I personally don't care about the risks of it.

My friend's hubby though stopped taking it, he was concerned about it but then he doesn't control his Type II at all, he's a heavy smoker, drinker and eats all the wrong foods.

Do you mean that avandia can caused problems like edema……but how can this medicine cause such side effects? I know that smoking, cancer or high level of salt in the blood can cause edema……this medicine seems to be dangerous….for what purpose is this medicine used? I have an uncle who had this problem and he used aldactazide; http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3108-s-ALDACTAZIDE.aspx …..He is fine now but he use to suffer a lot. I still remember that he couldn’t walk properly and he had other health complications which worsen his case.

I just moved back to Central NY and my new dr. took me off avandia, but now my Hemoglobin a1c is 9 and my bloodsugar is uncontrolled. I had a post here awhile ago where others have sang the praises of Januvia....Tomorrow I'm seeing another new dr. and asking for Januvia with hopes that it will help to lower the bloodsugar.

What are you both on right now for drugs?

I've always had REALLY high sugars. The only drug that worked to lower them was Avandia and Actos.

Glucophage always raised them, I've heard that Byetta can raise them during the night, and I've heard for many, Januvia has raised nightime and evening bloodsugars as well.

After Glucophage, I started on Long lasting Insulin and it helped somewhat, but it did nothing without the complimenting drug of Avandia.

Also, just recently I was put on one dose of Lantus with Novolog 3x's a day and it raised my bloodsugars past 300.

So be careful with asking for Insulin, it may not work either.

What are you both eating? Have you switched from white processed flour and pastas to whole grains? From using regular sugars to splenda or stevia?

In fact, with your bloodsugars out of whack, you should stay away from even the whole grains and pack on the green veggies and veggies altogether that are lower in glycemic index.

fruits like apples. The lesser the sweet taste, the lesser the sugar issues., berries are good, but again, lower the amount.

Do NOT skip meals. Skipping meals actually makes your bloodsugars go sky high because your body needs that extra meal to keep your bloodsugars level.

Exercising 30 minutes a day will lower your bloodsugar as well.....however, I would definately test before you exercise and after to find out if your bloodsugar gets higher. Sometimes, it raises bs in some people.

I believe because of its protective effect of the pancreas, its reversal of insulin resistance, its improvement to blood flow, its glucose level control, and its ability to slow the progression of type-2 diabetes, it will be found that Avandia is the best and most effective oral diabetic medication to prevent complications and improve both quality and length of life. Maybe better than insulin for those with insulin resistance.

Check out the results to the Adopt Study that was done to find the positives that were found in Avandia.

The ADOPT study showed Avandia to be both very safe and very effective in slowing the progression to insulin. Another study showed Avandia caused a 38% increase in glucose uptake by the heart. Improving heart muscle fuction improves blood flow and reduces the chances of diabetic complications.
Other studies show increased sensitivity of muscles to insulin, reduced insulin requirements, improved blood flow by those taking Avandia.

I dont think I will ever try Avandia. Most doctors in this area have taken their patients off of it.

Right now I only take Metformin.

It's a shame really., because even the dr. who made that trial in Cleveland has said it is a great drug for Insulin Resistance. If you do the research, you'll find more research singing the drugs praises than just one study done by someone who worked for the comepetitors company.

Many dr.'s are actually putting their patients back on the drug. It's a shame that some, in your unfortunate case and in other areas, haven't. The research done by Dr. Nissen wasn't done in a correct fashion. Issues with their heart attacks could have happened off the drug just as much as it was on......the study wasn't done correctly in my own opinion.

Go to sites like Dlife.com, or Diabeteshealth.com for articles on Avandia and you'll get so many who appose it.

There's so much research on the positive side of Avandia that it kind of stinks how we're being scared into not taking the drug.

All in all, it's up to the individual to research and make the right outcome for their own bodies...but I thought I'd add a bit of opposition because the drug has done me so much good. I'm planning to get back on it in a couple of weeks myself after doing a whole lotta research on it.

Maybe if your thinking your bloodsugars are out of range, you should try Actos if your not sure about Avandia. At least before insulin. In many Type II's while insulin can help some, others it raises their bloodsugars.

We already overproduce insulin in our bodies, adding insulin just adds more insulin.Often, our bodies will use what it will and it won't know what to do with the rest and will store it as fat. Hence the reason we need some insulin sensitizer like Met. or a Rosiglitazone Maleate.

Here are a few articles for you to judge on your own what works best...

This article explains why Avandia and exercise enhance each other's diabetic control

http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org...act/51/12/3479

Meta data from the Nissen study that started the controversy:

http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/356/24/2457/T3

If you calculate the sum of the number of patients you will find 15,386 for Avandia users and 12,181 for control groups. The average time period that these patients were followed is about 1.5 years. Doing the arithmetic for deaths 39 in about 22.5K years is over 500 diabetic years per heart related death and about 250 year for each Myocardial Infarction, hardly a high rate in a population where 10,000 expect to die of heart attack or stroke. The last entry is for the ADOPT study where 1,456 patients were followed for an average of four year, that is 1 death in 2,900 years and one Myocardial Infarction each 250 years. Surely these numbers indicates a very safe medication from heart health standpoint. In one of the studies, 49653/211 Avandia was given to people with congestive heart failure, a NO-NO. In test AVM100264 Avandia was given to obese individuals. By adding clinical studies where Avandia was used on persons that should not use Avandia, Dr. Nissen got a control group rate of deaths lower than the Avandia patients. In no way do the death rates or rates of Myocardial Infarctions come close to the positive benefits of Avandia and exercise.

Information on the ADOPT study

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/58100.php

If people check out some of these links, they'll find that there have been studies showing more reasons TO take Avandia, than that one study which was done by a dr. who had previousely worked for the competitor (Actos) and sounds kind of a bit political with something to gain from his response.

There are more articles from other studies if anyone wants the links. But I thought I'd start there. There's a whole lotta research that points to the benefits of Avandia and just one study that in my opinion, wasn't done correctly.
