For those of you who are on Avandia or Actos, what do you feel are the best and worst things about them? I have been on Gluc XR for a while, but had to get off since there were some moderate interactions with a few of my other meds. I would like to kind of get an idea of which med I would like to try before I go in to see my doctor. Any opinions? Anything you feel is important to know? TIA!

Hey, I am not sure how you reacted to the Gluc but I could not stomach it so I was switched to Avandia and I have to say I love it. I have had no adverse reactions...it hasn't mixed badly with any of my meds (you can look in my sig to see what I'm on), and unlike the Gluc. the Avandia pills are really tiny, which I love. I still get my periods regularly thanks to Avandia. I haven't really noticed any thing weight wise but that probably b/c I am not eating so beautifully. Hope that helps.
Megan

I've been on Actos since 4/15. So far I really like it. I agree that the smaller pills are a plus! Also, you can take them anytime, not just with food, and no loose bowels are another big plus!
So far I've only had 1 af since starting it (within the first week of taking it), so I haven't had a real af on it but maybe soon . My dr & I are hoping that I will start ovulating on it, as I took Rezulin years ago and I ovulated on that. Starting tomorrow I will begin taking 30mgs instead of 15. I have an appt next month to discuss how I'm doing, and if I am still not ovulating, she wants me to have ovarian drilling done.

Thanks, Christy. You and Megan have been really helpful. It looks like it will be a positive change for me whether I choose Avandia or Actos, so I guess I can't really lose!

I was on Glucophage, and at first it was fine. 6 months later I couldn't eat 2 bites without running to the bathroom. Dr. put me on Actos and I love it! Had periods without BCP for the first time. With the glucophage I never did. Some people will tell you they have a harder time loosing weight on Actos, but I have lost 62 lbs since last August, so dont' that scare you.
Let us know how it goes!
Hugs
Julie

Julie, THANK YOU! Gaining weight was honestly the only thing I was worried about with switching, since I certainly don't need to gain any more weight! And CONGRATS on your weight loss, 62 pounds is incredible! I am impressed!

Ellie...the weight gain most people experience from Actos is from water weight. You should be careful to have liver panel (bloodwork) checked periodically just to make sure it's not affecting your liver as it, along with many diabetic meds can. The key to preventing the water weight gain is to take the smallest dose possible that gives you the positive effects you want, without the negative effects you don't want. The period I had in April was induced with Provera. I started Actos right after it and had a period like clockwork in May. I've been on the Actos since the beginning of May and have been very pleased. Glucophage gave me terrible diarrhea and I had to take it 3 times a day. The insert for Actos said to use birthcontrol with Actos as it can cause ovulation in insulin resistant women. Their website also says it too...check it out www.Actos.com
Good luck whatever you and your doctor decide is best for you!
Wanted to add that I did not gain any weight with Actos...as a matter of fact, I've been on WW for 3 weeks so far and have lost 5.6 pounds.

Geesebaby, thanks for the info. I'm relieved to know that the weight gain is mostly water, since THAT at least is something I can deal with! And I would *love* it if it could manage to get my cycles regulated. Oh and BTW, congrats on your weight loss! It is very encouraging to read about all of these Actos/Avandia successes!!!

I'm on Actos as well and haven't had any problems. I've been on the med for two years now... so far so good.

I'm on Avandia - for about a year now. The only side effect I notice is if I don't take it at the same time every day I tend to get gassed up. I notice if I've forgot to take my pill because all of a sudden..... Otherwise it's great - only having to take one a day is a big plus.
Angela and Ducky, thanks for posting. I am kind of having a diifcult time deciding which one to ask for, although maybe when I go in my doctor will have a preference anyway.
How did you choose between Actos and Avandia?

Well, my Dr. asked me if I had coverage (and I didn't at the time) because there was a new medication out we could try (Avandia). I wasn't given a choice. Maybe it wasn't available in Canada at the time? Either way - anything had to be better than the "intestinal troubles" with the met.
You know, if you don't have insurance coverage...or you're on a co-pay like I am...you may want to call your pahrmacy and ask them the prices for each med. May sound silly, but that may be one way to pick.
I don't know much about Avandia, dear.
Hugs

I have insurance coverage and my doc didn't give me the option of Glucophage, Actos, or Avandia. She gave me samples of the Actos to try for a couple of weeks and I've been on it ever since. I, of course had to follow up with her to make sure that there were no reactions or problems. Definately as your physician for samples of the medication he/she prescribes. Normally the meds will take up to two weeks to work effectively.
