I've been lurking on this board for several weeks now and couldn't resist joining in. I have so many symptoms of PCOS (hair loss, facial hair, irregular periods, skin tags, etc..). About 10 years ago I had a biopsy for my hair loss and was told by the dermatologist that she couldn't find any reason for it other than possible heredity but suggested that I ask my doctor to test me for PCOS. Well, I did suggest that, but it only upset the doctor. He told me that wasn't what I had and basically ended the discussion with no further testing. I was young and dumb and didn't insist on it or change doctors.
Long story short, I have lived with these symptoms for too many years. I feel like an ogre. I have a new doctor and just last week told him of my problems and asked him to test me for PCOS. He did a blood test and sent me for an ultrasound. I am currently awaiting the results.
Question: Should I stick with this doctor or ask him to refer me to an endocrinologist?
I would suggest not sticking with him if he is just a general practise doctor.... they dont know much when it comes to this stuff....
If it is PCOS start seeing an endocrinologist, or an OBGYN, someone who specialises in it.

I agree with Darlene. If you find out it is pcos you should see a specialist. My regular doctor said I did'nt have it, but I went to my obgyn last week because of 2 missed periods ( 2 Neg. preg tests) and she told me that she thought I had pcos. So I am waiting on test results too. I have suspected something was wrong with me for a while. ( irregular periods, weight around middle, excess hair, skin tags, mood swings like crazy.) Good luck to you.

Thanks. He called Friday with the blood test results and did tell me that my testosterone levels were high and my results were "consistant with pcos". When I told him I'd already had the ultrasound at the imaging center, he said he was going to track the results of that test and give me a call back. I waited until after 5 and then ran to the store thinking he wasn't going to call, but when I got home he'd left a message on the machine. Now I have to wait until Monday to find out more.
I really love this board. I cried the first time I came here because it was so wonderful to find people that have some of the same issues that I do. There arent many places you can discuss hair loss, skin tags, facial hair with other women.
I am very thankful for this board too. I am learning a lot about pcos. I have an ultrasound scheduled for tuesday. I'm nervous, but I just want to know so i can get the treatment I need.

This is a wonderful place, you don't need to feel embarrassed about any problem you have...at least one of us has/had the same issues. Hope you find out all you need to know...but if you don't, its a great place to ask.
Take care, and welcome again.

I am going to start (Monday) on 500mg metformin 1 x a day for a few days and then move up to 2 x daily. I am also scheduled to meet with a dietician next Wednesday. Anyone have words of advice about this diet thing?
I got the "Insulin Resistance Diet" book and have been reading it, but am not feeling very confident. I could really use a shopping list and/or menu plan for the first couple of weeks - until I get used to making these dietary changes.
