Has anyone tried azelaic aicd (finacea gel)? My derm said it's safet to use while TTC, but I've read mixed reviews on other sites about effectiveness, acne getting worse and irritation.

I have used it and it does a good job. It does burn if you put too much on so make sure you only use a thin layer if you do get a prescription. I've had very fine bumps on my face just under the surface of my skin for years and this is the only thing that helped clear it up.

I use skinoren..the foreign brand of 20% azelaic acid (like azelex). Finacea is for people with rosacea, its 15%. It works really well, I use it and retin-a at night (which DO NOT use TTC). If you want to switch it up, if you've got bad acne, use the azelex once or twice a day, and then at night or another time a day, start using md forte lotion 1 (12 or 15% glycolic acid), you can also start using the cleanser with glycolic acid. It helps clear the pores, while azelex main function is antibacterial, it also helps to clear pores, and can lighten discolorations. I say this because you cannot use something else to unclog pores like salicylic acid or retin-a, etc, usually using more than one thing at once that works in two ways are best-- also don't use stuff with alcohol (very irritating), menthol (like in toners), and oils to clog pores. GOod luck! Also I use a microfiber theyre called "microdermabrasion" face cloth to help exfoliate.
Yes I'm absolutely sure you can use glycolic acid while TTC and full term pregnancy. You can find information about using all kinds of products, whether theyre safe or not for pregnancy in the articles, and also the questions if you search at www.dermadoctor.com That is also one place you can buy MD Forte (which is the most effective and gentle glycolic acid). Actually, I could get azelex from the doctor, but its cheaper, and I don't need a prescription (22 dollars..free international shipping) for Skinoren (exact same thing) at www.inhousepharmacy.com Its under skin care.
my dr said finacea was originally for acne..but found it even better for rosacea..so i figure i win both ways!! xoxo jenn

I'm sure finacea would work for both rosacea (which has acne lesions) and acne, but its more gentle for the rosacea. But if you're using it for acne, I think youshold use it up and next time you go to the derm ask for azelex, since its a higher strength, but theres not that big of a difference. In fact up to 8% azelaic acid is considered okay for OTC, but no one did it until dermadoctor..shes got some 8% azelaic acne/rosacea moisturizers...but I have no idea if it would work at that low of a strength (the finacea = 15% and the azelex/skinoren =20). But its much much cheaper for me to order the prescription version from new zealand (but there its over the counter) than buy dermadoctors over priced stuff for sure..lol
I have sensitive skin, and haven't had a problem with the 15% unless I put on on right after using a glycolic acid toner. does 20% burn or do you find it manageable?

I used azelaic acid before. I didn't find it to clear up my acne, but it does help with scarring, and it's clinically proven to help with scarring.
Good luck!

I have sensitive skin, and although the retin-a can sometimes make my skin peel and burn, the 20% azelaic acid hasn't done that really-- The very first time I used it it made my skin red and really burn, but I'm pretty sure it was because I used benzoyl peroxide at the same time and theres some kind of bad reaction doing that. Rarely, my skin will burn for about 5 minutes after I put it on, but it never makes it red or dried out.. I think it works much better than the Rx topical antiobiotics do for the acne. I don't know about scarring (could you post me a link?)...I haven't read that, but it has been proven to lighten/bleach post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (red/dark spots from past acne) and other hyperpigmentations on the face like sunspots.
