Default B12 deficiency linked to anovulation and possible miscarriage?!?

Has anyone ever heard of this? I ask because I do not normally have a period, ever, without taking medications. I finally got pregnant in 2005, had a miscarriage, but I was taking multi-vitamin, Ester C, folic acid and B-12. I just recently started taking those supplements again, and last month added in the B-12, one pill under the tongue. My period came on, all on it's own this week! I haven't had a spontaneous cycle in over a year. (My doc induced one in May for a procedure, had to use provera) I was shocked, and irritated, I was on vacation! Now I am thinking that there may be a link between b-12 deficiency and infertility? I am really just grasping at straws, hoping beyond hope, but it is the only thing that makes sense to me. Nothing happened until I added the B-12 when I got pregnant. To my knowledge I haven't ovulated since then.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this? Or could it be the vitamin C? Or am I just wishful thinking again?

I have researched this a little on the internet, there are articles written that say B12 deficiency could inhibit ovulation and connected to miscarriages.

This is something i found:

FERTILITY
B12 plays a critical role in cellular replication so it is no surprise that deficiency can manifest as low sperm count. High doses are key to successful treatment. In one study, 27 percent of men with sperm counts less than 20 million given 1000 mcg per day of vitamin B12 were able to achieve a total count in excess of 100 million;41 in a study in which men were given 6000 mcg per day, 57 percent of men with low sperm counts demonstrated improvement.42

As pernicious anemia often leads to infertility, B12 supplements can allow a woman to conceive. Traditional societies considered foods rich in B12 as important for fertility. B12 plays a key role in the development of new tissue; thus women who are deficient may not ovulate, or a fertilized egg may not develop, resulting in miscarriage. Prolonged B12 deficiency results in infertility. In one study, a woman who had suffered seven miscarriages before discovering her B12 deficiency went on to have three children once the problem was corrected.43

the above quote was taken from : http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnut...itaminb12.html

I remember I was anemic as a child/teenager...I remember being so sick I could not sit in a chair and the doctor couldn't find anything wrong until she looked at my mouth...she said i was pale, she finally tested me for anemia and said if my mom had waited any longer I could have gone into a coma...I also remember walking to the store a block away and passing out, I could not stand up for more than 5 minutes...I was severly anemic...I wonder...off to do more research...if anyone knows anything about this please share.

How much of the B-12 are you taking daily? I just went out and bought some.

Thank you!

Default hi

sorry it took me so long to reply...I travel with my job and when I am out on the road I don't take the bottle with me that the supplements come in, i just put them all in a bag...I will call DH and see if he can tell me the strength.

I am also taking B6, multivitamin, EsterC, folic acid, fish oil, and I am ordering sublingual progesterone....I will keep you posted if anything happens for me.

what strength did you buy?

So if Met causes a B12 deficiency, should doctors be 'prescribing' a B12 supplement to women on Met who are TTC?

I'm not denying that B12 could have had an influence on your period - but you did say you were on vacation, that was about the only time I would get one in my teens because I would be stress free! lol

i have heard where some doctors will recommend taking a B12 supplement along with Met, but I can't say for sure. i think you would need to talk to your doctor about that and maybe get tested I don't take Met, i had bad reactions to it. I have been looking at B6 and infertility and there is a connection there also.

yeah, I was on 'vacation', which was not really vacation, I took a week off from work, so i was at home (I also caught a terrible cold from DH that I am still battling 2 weeks later!!) I travel as an auditor, so DH and I only see each other for a weekend every two weeks, so my time off was really precious. It was irritating to have AF during my time off.

When I got pregnant 2 years ago I was taking a multi vit, EsterC, folic acid,
B12 and natural progesterone cream. I have been trying to figure out what actually allowed me to ovulate and trying to reproduce it, but I haven't had any luck, so i started researching each individual component and B12 and B6 help with progesterone production and fertility. i think those are my 'magic' pills. Some people get preggo using Met or vitex or clomid, those things didn't work for me, so I have to play around with what did work and figure 'it' out again.

Later I will post here some of the info I have found on B6 and infertility...

This is really interesting to me because I have low B12. Doc don't know why because I eat meat. Anyway I hadn't been taking my B12 like I was supposed to for awhile and that is when I stopped getting my period and the pcos was diagnosed. Could be related.....well I will definately start back on my b12 now!

Oh please keep me posted on how/if it is working for you. I just bought a bottle of B6 from Wal-mart (250mg 1x/day w/meal). I am hoping this helps. at this point I am excited, and hopeful about this vitamin B 'discovery' of mine...I am still reading everything I can find on google. OMG...I just looked at my bottle, i picked up B1 instead of B6...gotta go back to Wal-Mart.

This is interesting for me too.

I am b-12 defficient.

I've had 3 miscarriages in the past year.

Each time right before I got pregnant (coincidentally) My doctor gave me a double dose or an "Extra" dose of B-12 in my shot.

I joked with her each time saying, you know what happened last time you did that!

(re: getting pregnant, which was what we wanted anyhow).

I would like to believe it's linked myself.
