My DH and I decided on our babies names as soon as we found out that we were having boys. We decided on Nathaniel James and Ethan Gerard. Now DH is having second thoughts and really wants Ethan to carry his brothers middle name. The catch .... his middle name is Patterson which is really a last name. I don't like the idea of it one bit, but my Dh and his bro are close and he asked me to please just think about it and consider it. He said either one of these would be fine:
Ethan Gerard Patterson Real or
Ethan Patterson Real
Frankly, I like neither but don't want my husband to be dissappointed. I also don't want my poor son dawning two middle names or a last name as a middle name. I feel stuck and don't know what to do. I am really hoping that DH will just forget about it, but am sure that won't happen.

i will post my opinion, but this is also coming from someone who is giving all her children 2 middle names... i would go with the 2 middle names... that way if your child doesnt like it he can always just igore that its really there. and also how often is the middle name used--- besides mom yelling at them when they did something wrong. at least your dh is involved instead of saying what ever you want, and then complaining about it later on that he didnt have a say in the name.
look on the bright side at least the initials dont spell something like my poor child-- he is MARD for life. i know bad joke, but i love his name.

Tough call. I would say just use patterson only because I have concienced dh that it is really important to me to use Steven as a middle name because it is my step dads name. He has been my dad since I was 4 so he is more then a stepdad kwim, he also gave up having any biological children of his own to be with my mom brother and I. he made that choice when he was 19. Any way Jake has always loved the name Joshua and I had agreed along time ago that we would use it for a middle name if we had another boy. He decided that it was so important to me to use Steven that he too would grow to love the name. However in the end it is up to you and dh to decide.

You know I hated it when my baby's dad decided to give the baby the middle name Dutch. The baby's full name is going to be Daniel Dutch Graf. Dutch is not really a name, it's his grandfathers nickname that he got during the Vietnam war (his grandfather served in the Army). So I tried to get around the name by asking him what his grandpa's real name was......ugh.....Carroll. I just stuck with Dutch because no one is going to call him by that name anyway. I weighed exactly how much it meant to him and I know his grandfather means a lot to him so I gave in.

Just MHO, but instead of thinking of naming your boy after someone else -- not to say you shouldn't -- but try to decide which name is more appealing overall ...
You don't want your kid to refuse to tell his friends his middle name when they ask ... middle names always seem to be embarrassing ...
Oh I think Patterson is a cool name. I agree with the above poster who said its rather distinguished. It sounds cool to me.
Dont hate me but I like the Patterson better than Gerard.
Ethan Patterson Real...has a lovely flow.
Im naming my son after my husbands grandfather. His name was Edward....so we will have a Keagan Edward. I couldnt decide at first because I kinda wanted to give him my Dads middle name, but since I picked the first name I felt DH should get to have dibs on the middle name.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I like Patterson, but in my family it is really common to have a last name for a middle name. Both my brother, dad and mother have a last name as their middle name. Ultimately it's up to you and your DH and only you know whether you can live with it or not. I'm struggling with a name issue too (more of a cultural identity issue because our son is biracial), so I know how hard it is. Good Luck!

IMO i would go with whichever you like better, since it is something your husband really wants, and also a middle name is not really a big deal (imo) i know to some more than others but most people dont use their middle names for much anyway right? like my middle name is katherine but most people dont even know that! u know?? its totally up to you to decide though, im sure you will work out a compromise, how about living with it for a while and perhaps it will grow on you, i think a last name for a middle name is kinda cute anyway!
about the 2 middle names... well perhaps my daughters name will put it in perspective for you: Hana bint Hani muhammad hassan alagbaree
and my cousins name: Hinekatorangi aniwaniwa ataahua atawhetu puke riki
*giggle*
i hope you come to a happy conclusion, important thing is that your sons are healthy little boys aye!
