This was my first month on Clomid (50mg). I took the pills CDs 3-7; CD 11 I noticed a rash on my chest that looked a lot like acne but it was warm to the touch and itched really bad. The very next day, I started have serious hot flashes. I read that those were common and to be expected. The rash got better each day and wasn't unbearable at all. I noticed that while BDing, I was really dry "down there" and about a week ago, started itching like crazy up towards the vulva area, on the skin outside. I read on some threads here on SoulCysters that some others had experienced that as well and I just thought it was from too much BDing.
CD 20 (last Fri) I had my progesterone levels checked. I had an appointment with my OB/GYN on Wed (yesterday) to discuss possibly starting Provera or having a D&C because I had not had a period since Dec '08. My doctor said it was ok to start the Clomid without a period so we just started it on Nov 3 so it would be easier to identify cycle days.
Well, we discussed my side effects and the doctor told me that he's never had a patient on Clomid have any of those side effects, he's convinced that my body rejected the medication and my bloodwork came back at 0.8, he was looking for 10.0-12.0 at least. So it's obvious that the Clomid didn't work. So - I'm thinking we'll increase the dose and try again (maybe after trying to have a period first).
After a quick exam to find out why I'm itching so badly, he tells me I am "a little yeasty" so he prescribes Diflucan (a single pill you take to get rid of a yeast infection); well, I've never had but one yeast infection in my entire life and it was back when I was like 17.
The doc tells me that I'm out of his "comfort zone" and he's no longer comfortable treating me. He said that none of his patients have ever experienced the side effects I had, that my body was rejecting the Clomid and possibly allergic to it. He said Femera would be even worse since it actually lowers the estrogen (versus fooling the brain into thinking it's lowered like the Clomid does).
He recommended that I go to the Jones Institute, an infertility research hospital in Virginia (about an hour away).
He wiped his hands clean of me right then and there. There's nothing he can do for me he said.
After a mini breakdown in front of my mom, she calmed me down and recommended that I get a 2nd opinion so I've got an appointment with another OB/GYN on Dec 7th 2 hrs away in Greenville who has a good reputation for dealing with infertility. My insurance doesn't cover fertility treatments so this is my last opportunity.
I'm so upset, so depressed and terrified.

Big hugs.. i dont know what to say but there are other options I am sure!
thank you hun ... I've been reading another thread here on SoulCysters and it's giving me hope; I just think my doc was a jerk and didn't want to deal with someone who isn't like everybody else.

That is rediculous! I would wash your hands clean OF HIM! Definitely get that second opinion. I'm sure you'll find what works for you, you just need a doctor who is willing to treat the individual patient. Not everyone fits the "textbook" model!!!

In my experience, OBGYNs have very limited experience with treating infertility. They hand out Clomid and that's the extent of their help. They are more equipped for pap smears and delivering babies. Sucks, but that's the way it is.
It sounds to me like you are allergic to Clomid, at the very least, unresponsive. I think your doctor should not have reacted so dismally. You are not weird, this does happen, Clomid doesn't work for everyone. This is not necessarily the end of the road, there are other treatments you can do. As for the yeast infection, yes it could be a reaction from the Clomid. Do you happen to be on any other medications? Antibiotics especially can cause them too. I wouldn't worry.
I would seek out a RE, maybe take your OBGYN's advice and go to the Jones Institute. They can provide many options. Good luck and keep your chin up!

I'm really sorry that you're having to go through all of this To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. . Its very puzzling to me that your doctor didn't induce your period, especially since you haven't had your period for almost a year!!
Most, if not all doctors do NOT start their patients on any form of fertility treatment without having a period first. Afterall, how can you consider just any day of the month as cycle day 1??!!
In my eyes your doctor ruined this cycle for you by doing what he did, and I believe that its best that you've moved onto a different doctor.
As for the reaction you had... ummmm never heard of one like it. I never had any reactions to Clomid other than mild headaches, hot flashes and insomnia. I was on clomid for a total of 7 cycles before switching to Femara.
The chances that you would react the same way to Femara as you did to Clomid are very slim.
Here's a website that tells the difference between Clomid and Femara:

the only other med I am on is Met 1500mg/day. I can't afford fertility treatments and my insurance doesnt cover it so that's why I am so aprehensive about going to the Jones Institute... I hope I can get more out of my 2nd opinion appt ... thank you for your help!

thank you for the information! I thought hot flashes and vaginal dryness were normal side effects... and that a rash was possible. I understand that the rash could mean an allergic reaction but good grief, I have never had an allergic reaction to any other med before -- why this one?!?!?!
I will look at the link you provided; hopefully the next doc I see will be more comfortable treating me ...

this was my first clomid 50mg cycle as well.
i had a few hot flashes but nothing crazy. HOWEVER - i did break out into hives for 6 days!! it was completely tolerable, they would only appear about an hour after taking the clomid pill. they were the kind that appear and dissappear and itch a bit and were on my arms and legs. left a rash on my arm for a few days.. because it was my only symptom and completely tolerable i finished the dose. unfortunately it looks like the clomid hasnt worked so Dr. said next protocol would be femara since i had the somewhat allergic reaction to the clomid. i also had a head cold the same time so i wasnt sure if it was def the clomid or not - but pretty much 24 hours after the clomid was out of my system the rash went away so im assuming that it was def the clomid that did it.
just sharing so you know that its not SO rare and you can ask your dr. about femara next. if i were you i may change doctors though since no doctor should feel uncomfortable just cause you had an allergic reaction. but thats just my opinion - HUGS and baby dust!! good luck!!

I am sorry you had the rash but it makes me feel SO much better!!! lol... what's weird is just by what I have read, he shouldn't have told me that Femera would be worse if I am in fact allergic to the Clomid ... maybe it's just a blessing in disguise and I really just need to go see another doctor anyway. I have an appt with another on Dec 7th ...

yeah im actually glad to know i wasnt the only one to get rashy from it too! my doc wasnt too concerned since i said it was my only symptom and completely tolerable - although like i said i did have a head cold that week as well - but i dont think that the cold symptoms were related to the clomid. anyway my doc wasnt overly surprised either since every body reacts different to different medications.
good luck with the new doc! since femara is a different drug its prob worth a shot!

hey im here in NC with you! i figured you were in NC when i saw you say Greenville, and sure enough you are!
anyway, i agree with pp's, for one, sounds like he is just into pap smears and exams, etc. and i haven't taken fertility meds, but i do know they always want you to start 'clean' either through meds or even a d&c. they don't want you getting pg, and you may have pre-cancerous built up lining in there. also you need to get your cycle started and going when you do the meds. there are alot of things, im always reading about all this stuff i do not know what half of it is! the ladies on here do all kinds of things i never knew about. if your new gyn is good, he may even refer you to a RE if you need that. good luck
