Hello!
I'm at a loss! About a year ago I went to an endocrinologist because I was just generally feeling under the weather and my PCP couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. She first checked my thyroid because my Mom has Hashimoto's. While I do have elevated antibodies I am not hypothyroid yet. She also noticed elevated androgens. We were going to begin a battery of tests but I got pregnant so we had to put those on hold. While I was pregnant I read a lot about PCOS because that is what my endo expected I had. After a little reading I was absolutely convinced she was right. I have never had normal cycles (sometimes going for half a year between periods), I have high cholesterol, I have always had an extremely hard time losing weight despite being very active (between pregnancies I usually can work up to 6 mile runs but have never been anything but overweight or obese) and I have the dark spots under my arms (can acanthosis nigricans be caused by anything other than too much insulin?). Also, the only way I ever manage to lose weight is with IR diets. About a week after giving birth she checked my androgen levels which remained elevated (79 total testosterone, 6.6 free testosterone, DHEA was elevated as well but I can't remember the number) but my insulin and glucose were perfect. Actually my insulin was low. Does anyone know if being postpartum can lower insulin levels? So, now we're waiting for a couple of month and then we will retest everything. If anyone has any idea what might be going on with me I'd love to hear your theories. I'm baffled. I was especially convinced that I had PCOS because of the dark spots under my arms which I have had since puberty. Of course, I have had five children so getting pregnant isn't a problem for me but even that surprises me since my cycles are so unpredictable. Thank you in advance for your input!
