Okay, the other night my boyfriend found a bald spot on the back of my head. It isn't too noticeable because other hair covers it up, but it is about the size of a half dollar. I don't know what my options are. I know that this may be nothing serious, but could you please share your story with me. Basically to ease my mind. I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday, but that seems so far away right now.

One question -- is it at the crown of your head or is it somewhere else? In other words, is it at the spot where your hair grows away from, in all directions, what would be the back of your parting, if you were to part your hair?
It is a little lower than the crown of my hair. It is really on the back of my head more than anything else. I would guess about 2-3 inches from the crown. It just has me baffled right now more than anything else.
Is it smooth and totally hairless or is it like mine thinning and just more noticeable ... it its totally smooth it could be alopecia aerata if its thinning you could have female or male pattern baldness like me

I have a similar problem. I have a bald spot a bit bigger than a half dollar on the top back of my head. It's been noticeable for some time. The hair is so sparse that the skin just shines right through.
I've read about TOPPICK, which somehow denses up each strand of hair to hide the baldness. I've always heard good things about it from cysters on the board. I've wanted to try it, but just never get around to ordering it.
You can run a search for it on the web.

Hi,
The bald spot you are describing sounds like alopecia areata.
What Causes Alopecia Areata? In alopecia areata, immune system cells called white blood cells attack the rapidly growing cells in the hair follicles that make the hair. The affected hair follicles become small and drastically slow down hair production. Fortunately, the stem cells that continually supply the follicle with new cells do not seem to be targeted. So the follicle always has the potential to regrow hair.

If it's lower than the crown it's likely to be alopecia areata. If it had been at the crown it would be more likely to be male-pattern baldness which of course can affect women as well. And with pcos we tend to have hair growth patterns which are more male than female. However, this one probably isn't even pcos-related at all.
I have been losing hair by the handfull since my son was born, my hair was always thick so I never noticed it on my head until recently. I have definately lost more then half the hair I ever had. I only noticed a week or 2 ago that when I gel my hair, the back looks very very 'noticable'.
my step mom argued with me and my son that I lose the same amount of hair as everyone else, she is so intent on dismissing me that she will argue any bloody thing I say.
Sorry to hijack but I feel your pain.

Well ladies its official, the doctor agrees with you. He says it is alopeica aerata. According to my boyfriend some hair has started growing back. It is real thin and blonde, I'm a brunette with lots of gray so not sure what to think of the blonde part, but I can deal with this now that I know what it is!
Thanks again for your great advice. I knew I could count on you!!!
if you get this message, please let me know how you have been in the two years since.
i found a similar spot w/i 3 weeks of starting metformin and both the gynecologist/dermatologist told me there wasn't likely to be a connection, but i am hoping to collect more information from the "soulcysters" personal experience.
