(02-28) 10:04 PST BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) --
The government has again extended a ban on foreign adoptions of Romanian children -- this time until June 1.
Government spokeswoman Despina Neagoe announced the extension on Friday but did not give a reason.
Romania suspended international adoptions in 2001 after criticism from the European Union that the system was corrupt and allegations that Romanian children were being sold to foreigners.
The one-year ban has been extended four times because authorities said they needed more time to draft laws and present them to parliament.
Romania, which hopes to join the EU by 2007, has since drafted legislation encouraging domestic adoptions and has placed orphans in foster families or family-style institutions. It also has begun closing large orphanages.
An estimated 30,000 Romanian children have been adopted by foreigners since communism collapsed in 1989, according to international agencies.
The original ban left about 3,500 foreign families, many from the United States, France, Italy and Spain, stranded in the middle of adoption proceedings.
The number of children in state institutions has decreased to about 43,000 from 57,000 last year, while about 41,000 children have been placed in foster families or with close relatives, the government says.
