Question Battling Doctors...Need opinion

I have had my thyroid checked several times in the past since I am overweight and have always been told my thyroid was ok. I started seeing my RE a couple months ago to shoot for an IUI. He immediatly put me on Met and Thyroid. This week I went for a regular check up with my Primary Care and my TSH came back .0007 which he was very alarmed by. Apparently levels should be .3 to 5.0. He believes my RE is overmedicating me and this could lead to Grave's like symptom and possible heart arythmia (spelling?) if I continue. I have felt fine aside for the hormonal side effects from infertility, but his concern did strike mine. It did strike me as odd that my RE put me on Thyroid meds when my levels were ok. But when I asked him about it he said that sometimes although a level appears ok in the range aspect of it, it may not be enough for a person individually.
What do you ladies think about this??? Please help.

LynnLin,

The "0.3 to 5.0" TSH range is considered "normal". However, my RE told me that she considers a much lower number "optimal" for conception purposes - can't recall off the top of my head, but I think she said 2 or under is what she likes to see.

Also, TSH isn't all that should be examined - if I recall correctly, they should be testing your T-3, T-4, and free T-4 levels (possibly others as well) in order to get a complet picture of how well your thyroid is doing.

Your RE may have run additional tests that prompted him to put you on the thyroid meds.

HTH,

Ann

There are different types of hypothyroidism....your GP is treating you as if it is primary...in which case you follow the TSH levels.

But I suspect you are secondary type---ie pituitary failure. Ask your RE what type of hypo you are just so you know....TSH will not be reliable with secondary type hypo, you have to follow the t4 levels instead.

I am curious. My doctor keeps uping my thyroid meds. from 50 to 75 no1 100. I requested the tests results once and noticed there was only on test done FSH? Should I be concerned that she is only doing one? How much does it matter?
