well i did a little research and found out that there is a pcos clinic at the ucsf hospital, i'm just wondering if anyone has been there yet?? if so,how was the experience? did they help you in any way?
I am going there in a few weeks for my first appointment and follow up. Will post here and let you know my impressions!
Did you have to get a referral to go there? I'm curious as to how much it costs and if they take insurance.
Thanks,

As far as insurance goes, UCSF does accept insurance, but every insurance coverage is different. Some of the team is paid by insurance and the other part I believe is out of pocket. You should call there and ask the coordinator. They are helpful, and can answer lots of your questions. As a patient, you have to coordinate all your medical records and get a bunch of bloodwork. As far as I can tell, the appointments are two to three months out from the time you call.
Hope this helps.

Hello out there. Just going to fill you in on my opinion and experience at UCSF PCO Clinic…. I believe this is a great place to get a diagnosis, if you need one. But, if you have been diagnosed with PCO, this is not the place to go. You will get more of the same, old song and dance: Diet and exercise. Diet and exercise. Diet and exercise. The nutritionist and psychologist were very offensive. Both were ready to focus on the negative and to pick at me. I did not hear many solutions or positive feedback from either of them. I was accused of being a binge eater as well as a procrastinator. If I had not gone to my appointments with a healthy level of self-confidence, I would be in a puddle of negativity and despair from the way I was treated. As it is, I am still feeling quite angry and offended. Like I have read many times on these boards, there are women who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly and still cannot lose weight. I believe I am one of these women and there was no way either the nutritionist or the psychologist were open to this possibility. There was not-so-subtle messaging that I obviously am living in denial and have no control of myself. I had an expectation that the nutritionist could talk about a variety of diets and she couldn’t. I wanted to talk about things I had read on this board, like the effects of citric acid on losing weight or effectively raising metabolism by eating every two hours during the day… Um, no. I had hoped to speak to the psychologist about how to manage the negative effects of PCO on my self esteem or at least to receive some validation that PCO is hard to live with… Um, no, again. She is interested in forming a weight loss support group with the nutritionist and in having women with PCO “face” their weight problems. I have been “facing” my weight problem for over ten years, thank you very much for nothing. And, IMO, if you don’t share her point of view, you are in denial and have issues for therapy. So, that’s what my experience was. I wish I could report something better. To be fair, it could simply have been a personality mismatch. I do have hope that the vast amounts of information they collect will result in some serious research and subsequent findings that will help women with PCO in the future.

ugh!! i'm sorry for that horrible experience you had, well that totally deflated my expectations of them, here i thought they could perform some miracle..i know thats way too much to ask for especially with such a complex syndrome.
I know this may be out of the way for you, but I had a really good experience with 2 doctors at UC Davis Medical Center in Sac. One is Dr. Antoni Duleba an RE, and the other Dr. Kasim-Karakas an Endo.
They both specialize in PCOS and are both trying to help me conceive #3. They work with each other. Dr. Karakas is doing wonderful research on PCOS and ways for us to lose weight and correct our adrenal issues.
They are not fat-phobic, and have been very encouraging. She did put me on the South Beach Diet, however, but, that's because I am TTC.
HTH.
P.S. As far as Bay Area docs go, I conceived my DS #2 with Dr. Richard Rudd. He's near Alta Bates and not a fat-phobe either. He put me on Met, diagnosed me with PCOS and I was over 300 pounds.
