Unhappy BCP and Cholesterol

Hi all!!

I just got back some blood tests today and along with it came a note indicating i have high cholesterol. This is not the first time i've noticed this but this is the highest it's ever been. Before i was diagnosed with PCOS my cholesterol was normal even though i was very overweight. I have since lost over 50lbs but my cholesterol has sky rocketed. I think i remember reading somewhere that high cholesterol could be associated with taking BCPs and i have been on Yasmin since i received my diagnosis. I know that skinny people can have high cholesterol too (although i would hardly call myself skinny) but it seems odd to me that as i lose more weight my cholesterol keeps going up and i'm really starting to get concerned. I'm only 23 and don't want to add yet another pill to my daily regimen.

Please let me know if this rings a bell for anyone or if anyone else is having this problem....i really appreciate any help you guys can offer

thanx

I also have high cholesterol and I am only 20 yrs old. I have been on the pill for 2 years and it is what started this whole mess for me. I think it has to do w/ the pills, because i eat healthy and weigh 92lbs.

Hey girls!

I have the same probelm. I did blood test before starting with jasmin, and my cholesterol was 167. Now, after 3 months on the pill it is 230.

I asked doctor about it, and he said that it may be because of the pill, so now he gave me pill called Mercilon (Does anyone knows anything about this one?) whcih has lower amount of hormones.

I am doubting to start with them.. but he said that because of the ovarian cyst that I had, I should wait for 3 more months and then go off the pills.

I definitley decided to go off them, because I feel safer not putting hormones in my body..

Does anyone knows if the lower concentration of hormones can solve my problem with high cholesterol or it wont? I am afraid to switch to this pill, even though today I took the first one. Everything was ok with Jasmin, but you never know.

The hormones it contains are:

-Ethinylestradiol 0,020 mg
-Desogestrel 0,150 mg

I think that in the states this pill is called Mircette. I checked on the list, this is the one with the same amount of these hormones.

I am worried about taking them further, but I have to because of the cyst I had. He said that I should wait untill my body starts working normally again, and for that reason I shouldn't take pills less than 6 months in total.

Any advices?

@ poohybear1 - I am 24, and I am thin too.

Well, I have had high cholesterol for a few years, but it was "managed" by taking Liptor. I went on the Pill a few months back, and last month when we tested my cholesterol tripled!!!! I did not put two and two together, nor did my doctor apparently, as he doubled the dose of my Lipitor and added Tricor, which combined are not the safest, but he says it is better then having my #s so high.

I really want to stay on the Pill, but guess I should look into this a but more...

I never thought to think that my BCP can be causing my high cholesterol.
I am going to look into that further.
Is there a pill that wont make ones numbers go higher?
I am currently on Yasmin, and my chol. has been high for a few yrs now.

I'm not bcp's but I have high cholesterol and I'm 29. I've had high cholesterol throughout my twenties and I haven't noticed any medications (including bcp's) having any effect on it. I've just now started taking Crestor though because it doesn't seem to be going down and my family has a history of high cholesterol even without weight problems. What I've noticed is that high cholesterol seems to be linked to the conditions discussed on this website so you are not alone. Have you talked to a nutritionist after keeping a food diary to evaluate your eating habits? You may be taking in more cholesterol then you realize.

I am eating pretty healthy, and am cautious of what I put in myself. I do sports, 3-4 times a week, and I am thin.

My cholesterol went up drasticly since I am on bcp.
I dont think that healthy eating can help much if the high levels of cholesterols are caused by bcp. Then you should just avoid it. I am going to finish this pack, two more weeks, and I am done with bcp.

I somehow have the feeling that I don't benefit from taking them more than I am loosing on my health.
