Default BCP and emotional break downs?

I'd like to excuse it all on PMS but I don't think it's totally the case. I've been on Alesse for about 5 months now...and every time I'm just about done the pack I'm either so angry at the world or an emotional basket case. This time I had to take a 'mental' day and just sit home and be with my SO. I seriously just broke down and cried and could not stop. Does anyone else ever experience this when they're on BCP? Any suggestions?

Well... depending on how you look at it, you can't have PMS while on BCP... since you don't have real menstrual cycles... or you can potentially have PMS all the time, since you are synthetically providing hormones which can cause PMS to your body. But like, since BCPs put your cycles on hold... you can't blame PMS in the sense that you can't blame your body... if that makes sense.

Alesse is the pill I think I did best on mentally but EVERYONE is different. There have been pills I did mediocre mentally on and pills that I did terribly on. Mircette for example made me VERY ANGRY... I clearly remember the first week I was on it, I was driving home from work and I somehow managed to hit EVERY SINGLE RED LIGHT on the way. And I was so mad! And i was thinking, does this ALWAYS happening? WHY am I so mad about it today? It wasn't like I was in a big rush to get home, I was just ANGRY for some reason... This is the pill I was on when one of my housemates suggested I needed to get off the pills because I was just no fun to be around. His actual words were they were turning me into a total b!tch...

OrthoCept is another pill I did terribly on mentally. I had been on it maybe 2 weeks and it was Thanksgiving morning, I just woke up crying, couldn't even handle getting out of bed...

BCPs can have a profound effect on your mood. The progestin in them is a syntehtic progesterone and that's what makes you so emotional during PMS. Different pills have different types of progestins and they all effect women differently. It's possible you will have mood effects on one or two pills and do OK on most other pills.

There's also the possibility, if you are prone to mood disturbances anyway (I am) of taking an anti-depressant with your BCP... but I think it's best to find a pill that doesn't set you off emotionally in the first place.

So I'm guessing it would probably be a good idea to talk to a doctor about this. Maybe they can find something for me to level me out. Thanks so much.
