Default BCP & Hair loss

Does anyone know if there is a connection? I have been back on BCP for 3 months and I am losing much more hair per day. I was wondering if the BCP are affecting my hair loss? TIA.

Just to note: I saw the post below after posting this. I am looking for additional input on this issue- I am hesitant to trust a website selling stuff for my medical advice. Thanks/

When I was on Yasmin I read the booklet inside the box and it warned of hairloss. I have been off of it for 3 months and I have noticed that my hair really did begin to thin in the front while I was on it. I think the extent of the hairloss varies from person to person. I would ask your doctor. I know for a fact I lost hair.

Hi!
I too was on BCP for 3 mons and lost alot of hair. About 10 days ago I posted a message telling people to avoid BCPs. I found a website and I quoted the following :
You should check this with your doctor as a pill containing synthetic progesterone will trigger male pattern baldness in those women prone due to higher levels of male hormone. http://www.weightcontroldoctor.com/h...s/a-z/pcos.asp

You mentioned you are hesitatant to trust a website that sells products, but this website was started by Dr Sandra Cabot, she's an Australian doctor & naturopath and specializes in women's hormonal issues. Actually about 10years I was going thru an Australian fashion magazine that my friend got from her trip and an article was written by her that described PCOS. That was the first time I got a name to all my symptoms, hairloss, acne, weight issues. I went to a few local doctors with the magazine, saying look I have all these symptoms blah blah blah, couple of them were ignorant and 1 who knew about it shrugged it off because at that time I didn't have any cysts! But this woman knew... I order quite a few of her books on hormonal issues and they are really really informative.

If I were you, I would stop the BCPs asap.

I may be able to help and I may not. I was told that Spironolactone helps people with extra unwanted hair as well as people with thinning hair. I am not sure if this is true or not.

That being said... if it IS true then you might want to try Yaz. It has a dose of Spiro in it. I do not have the thinning problem but I do have dark facial hair and since I started taking the Yaz I have found that it is getting so much better.

If I am wrong about the Spiro helping with both issues, someone please correct me. Like I said, just what I was told.

Success Stories!!!

There is a success story posted by JennP3 dated 2Oct06. Sure did gave me hope about spiro. Jenn used to post on hairsite. If you go to that website, you'll find her progress from '04 I think. From desperate to hopeful to success. So there is hope for all of us.

I have had horrible hair loss the last year. I have been off BCP (for the first time in 7 years) for 1.5 weeks. My hair loss seems to already be improving a little bit. I've also been taking hair, skin, nails supplement by GNC for about 2 months. I hope it grows back .

I am freaking out. I discontinued bcp after taking it for 3 years a month ago. My hair is falling like crazy. Is it my body regulating itself? Will things get worse? I think the whole mess began by taking bcp about 5 yrs ago. Help!

I think it depends on what pill. All pills (except YAZ & Yasmin) have progestins that worsen IR--and therefore worsen PCOS. To boot, many pills are high or unopposed in estrogen, which can cause hairloss/acne/etc by itself. The wrong combo of those two hormones could certainly shed some hair or pop up some acne (as well as weight, moodiness, migraines, etc). For me the worst pill turned out to be Ortho Tri, after which I never did the bcp again.

Many bcp suck, but not ovulating, ever, IMO makes you lose hair also. Not to mention cancer risks and all that. Your body just tries & tries and produces bundles of estrogen with no progesterone to balance it. The estrogen sheds hair, or can convert to testosterone (and DHT) to shed it more. SUCKS!! The unopposed estrogen also goes on to wreak havoc on the uterus, cervix, and other female organs.

NPC, Prometrium, PIO, aka real progesterone is great, but not reliable birth control. And spiro causes birth defects, so be careful. I took spiro alone but had a copper IUD. Spiro alone made me bleed all the time though--one reason it's often prescribed with a bcp.

I also lost a ton of hair on metformin...it made my DHEA spike through the roof and no ovulation either. So if you've recently added met, it might be the culprit too.

I don't know...for me, spiro did stop shedding but no regrowth. But I was on 100 mg a day...I think YAZ is "equal" to about 25 mg spiro a day.
