Default BCP and Hairloss Q - Which Kind???

Hi girls!

I've been a longtime "boards lurker", but after getting my offical diagnosis this week i figure it's time to have a post or two..

My doctor wants me to go on a BCP to help hirsutism and periods, but i know that they aggravate hairloss in some people so i'm TERRIFIED to try one.

Which brands have you girls with hair loss problems had success with, and which would you avoid?

I was prescribed Desogen which is supposed to be "hair friendly", have any of you taken it and liked it? Any bad side effects?

Thanks so much. The info on the boards and reading about all of your experiences has helped me so much in getting through the tough realization that i have PCOS. I'm so glad i found SoulCysters. Hopefully soon i'll be able to help out some of you in return!

-Catherine

Hey! Welcome to sc! I also have problems with hairloss and I never found a BCP that helped my hair loss. I took Yasmin and I also took Kariva and both of them caused me to lose a lot of hair. I took Yasmin first and that is when the hair loss started so I don't know. I am currently on Metformin and my endo thinks that that might help me but I haven't seen any changes lately! Best of luck to you with the hairloss issue--I know how it goes!

YAsmin and Dianette (Diane35) are often prescribed ALONG with Flutamide, Propecia, Spirlactone to help improve hairloss Yasmin and DIannette will not increase the loss ... they have a minimal amount of anti androgens in them you need a stronger ... drug along with them

Thanks girls!

I'll bring that info to my gyn appointment tomorrow morning, and hopefully come up with something that'll help the periods without making the hair too much worse!

The Diane pills & Yasmin has a whopping dose of estrogen, though, and high/unbalanced estrogen can and does cause hairloss on rats (& me). Plus all the other fun estrogen things like bloat, weight gain, headache, high blood pressure, mood swings. Perhaps you should try a pill with lower estrogen dose, like YAZ or Mircette (Yasmin & Desogen respectively with just less estrogen). If you have breakthrough bleeding, you could always resume the other pills.

Mircette works great for me, but not the generic (Kariva). I have my doctor write "DAW" on my prescription so they dispense as written and give me the brand name! It clears up my acne, slows facial hair growth, and slows hairloss. But I also have hypothyroidism, so sometimes my hair still falls out regardless. I am searching this board wondering if I should add Spiro too, but for some reason my Dr is hesitant.

Yasmin has the same ingredient in it that is in Spirolactone which is used to help treat hairloss in some women .. Dianette has a similar anti androgen ingredient in it .. I was told by my GP and Endo that for PCOS these two were the most suitable. ... then again my doctor has talked ****e for yers

YAZ also has that same progestin from spironolactone, just less of the estrogen.

i did very well with yasmin, which was prescribed to me by my wonderful french doctor in london (till moved to america, changed insurance and found they didn't provide it anymore!).

i had terrible shedding a few years ago - i was losing over 100 hairs a day. some people say that's normal, but it wasn't normal for me. i took yasmin, and within 3 months my hair grew back and i had no shedding.

however, it didn't help with facial growth.

I have been on Dianette and Yasmin. The Yasmin did nothing for my facial hair. The Dianette was good for it but with both I got terrible migraines so had to stop entirely. Apparently even Yasmin has to higher estrogen levels for me. I don't suffer from hair loss so can't help you there. I really do think it's a slow process of trying something and if you don't notice anything after 3-6 months make change. It's a pain having to wait so long though.

I may have to ask about Mircette myself!

Good luck
