I was diagnosed with PCOS almost a year ago and had the classic "string of pearls" on both ovaries. My dr. put me back on bcp to make the cysts go away & prevent new ones from forming. She told me I had to stay on bcp until we were ready to get pregnant bc otherwise my ovaries could become covered in cysts and have a hardened shell. I will be honest and say I didnt believe her. I have been on and off the pill for the last year (probably off 4, on 6)---the good news is my cysts just about disappeared completely. Just thought I would put the info out there for anyone else who wears a similar rec from their dr and doesnt believe it. Obviously I am not cured, if I get off the pill, the cysts will come back. But for now I guess I am doing the right thing to protect my ovaries.
I came off of the pill last July due to wanting to conceive as well as other complications that I began to experience.
Last Friday I had an ultrasound and my ovaries looked "normal and healthy". I had one small cyst on my left ovary and that was it.
Now prior to beginning BCP I only had like 3 or four cysts but that was back when I was only 17. I took BCPs for 12 years. I believe that it was the pill that helped keep my ovaries healthy.
what pill are you on now? or were on. im 28 and im kinda scared of the pill ...because of blood clot risk. iw as wondering how old you are and what pill helped you so much.
I am 28. For the last year I have been on Yaz & Seasonale. I am back to Seasonale bc I didnt like certain aspects of Yaz (ie too freaking emotional). Good luck to everyone else!
I was on Yasmin for two years and it completely cleared the cysts on m left ovary. The right ovary still had quite a few cysts. So any birth control pill will do this because the pill prevents ovulation.

I've been off bcp's for over 7 years now, and my cysts never came back.
Since i was first diagnosed with PCOS, I've lost 90 pounds and kept most of it off, and I'm more active, eat better, and sleep better, so my hormones (for the most part) stay regulated without the aid of medication.
If after going off bcps you begin to ovulate and menstruate regularly, the cysts should not return (as a result of annovulation).

1 yr on diane-35 got my cysts to go away as well.. i used to have multiple cysts on both ovaries.. but the thing is that as soon as i stopped taking diane-35.. on the 5th day of my cycle(without the bcp) had no cysts but on the 11th day my ovaries had grown in size and many cysts had formed upto 8-10mm in size.. so i dunnoo.. bcps seem like a temporary relief to the bigger picture.. as long as ur on them it holds of the cysts off but once it is out of ur system its the same old story.. this is a major problem for me atleast cause i want to ttc soon.. but for all u cyters that dont.. this will help
For me, (just going off the way my abdomen feels, haven't had an ultrasound in a year) I don't think birth control helped me. I'm sure when I go back to my doctor next month he'll gripe at me, but I just hate birth control.
yay im very glad to hear about so many positive results on the pill! I just finished my first week of yasmin today.
How long did it take for you guys before the cysts started to go away [and pain decreased]?

meds: yasmin. prozac 20mg.
four months of lupron. its not as bad as everyone says.
diet: strict vegetarian. eat organic as much as possible. avoid dairy. unsuccessfully try to avoid carbs.
I had the new ultrasound approx. 11 months after the first one...but like I said, I was probably only on the pill about 1/2 the time. I never had considerable pain from the cysts so I really cant respond to that...taking the pill didnt change how I felt physically, only emotionally. Good luck to everyone!
I am not sure how long it actually took because I did not get any ultrasound until recently but I was on them for two years so somewhere in between that time. I am back on them now. Oh the pain never went away. I could always, throughout my cycles, feel the cyst burst and I sometimes had to take motrin to releive the pain but it was worth it. I am not going to get off them this time until I have lost some weight. I need to loose 45 pounds to be within a normal weight(160lbs.) and alleviate pcos altogehter. I am 5'8" and weight 208 pounds. I originally weighed 225. Loosing weight in combo with the pills will help with the cysts.
