Red face BCP making me INSANE!!??

Hey girls,
I have been on cryselle( think generic for Yasmin) for like almost three months. I think I am crazy...my mood swings are terrible. I cry...I want to snip at people...and I just don't feel like myself. I was put on BCP for my bleeding of course. Without them I bleed like every single day of my life. I work as a phlebotomist at a lab so I get access to checking my some of my blood work for free. HE HE HE. Anyway I have had some terrible bleeding on the BCP, and now my hemoglobin is like at 10.6!! Which is better than the 9.1 it was at two weeks ago. Has anyone ever had low hemoglobin after heavy periods from BCP? Am I just being petty or should I check into other options?
Thanks!

If this is being petty then i'd hate to see what being insane is.

I can't take bcps my self. I've been very out spoken about them. It seems to me thats dr's fix all for anyone with pcos. I have had the same things your are discribing. Terrible mood swings, wanting to cry, really in short feeling totally out of balance.

I won't take bcp's anymore because of it.

I really think you need to take in to account your body and how your reacting and pay attention really close hun.

I don't know about hemoglobin-- But when I first started BCP, I was put on Alesse (for birth control). It was great--my periods were regular and lighter, my skin cleared up (and now that I'm off TTC, I'm getting all the PCOS symptoms you hear about-- sure wish I could go back on). Sometime a couple years go the factory that supplied Alesse to New England burned down or something so the pharmacy changed my BCP prescription (without Gyn's permission) to something else (also low dose-- in a hard green case) that cost them less. It was AWFUL. I had horrible mood swings, cried all the time, was really fatigued, and bled heavily and early. It was a TERRIBLE month. So I called my Gyn and asked if I couldn't please go back to Alesse? She was pretty angry with pharmacy and put a "no substitutions" on my prescription. I went back to Alesse and my happy usual life. And, even better than that, since the pharmacy didn't have a regular supplier, just samples, for the past 2 years I ended up getting BCP for free because they couldn't charge for samples.

So the point of this long-winded story is that not all BCP are alike-- you might find one that works better for your body chemistry. Definitely check into other options.

I cannot take any bcp's or provera etc, I get so depressed and feel like i'm going crazy.

Maybe tell your doc how you are feeling and he may have some other options for you!

I have a quick question to add to this... I'm the exact same way, crazy on BCP, I was just put back on Yasmin because my doc thinks it will supress my symptoms of PCOS. Is it true that BCP will hinder my ovaries from ovulating, but in turn prevent cists that will lead to infertility?? My doc told me that it was my decision to be on BC, but I run the risk of losing my fertility if I don't get on something.

I can't take BCP's either, they mess me up big time. My doctor has told me it's something to do with Oestrogen levels and therefore any type of BCP is a no-no for me as I would have a reaction to all of them. I'm forever glad & gratefull I found out I couldn't take them, the doctor never gave me any other options before as they thought this BCP would give me regular AF and all would be hunky dory. I still feel angry they treated my condition in that way, very angry actually. I feel much better trying to figure out how to help my symptoms myself rather than to just cover them up with the BCP. I feel much better in myself trying to battle it out and find what suits me best etc., so maybe it's worth looking into more Good luck with what you decide and I hope it works for you. x

I am on Yasmin, starting week 6 tomorrow. I have been getting more migraines than normal, a constant headache, terrible mood swings. But the bleeding is regulated. My dr wants me to try and hang in for 3 months total, to see if it gets any better. Not fun, good to know I'm not the only one! Also, Provera did nothing for me. Didnt stop the bleeding or even slow it down.

Hi,

Firstly, welcome to SC - you've come to the right place!

Now, when I was diagnosed with PCOS 7 months ago my doctor switched my BCP from Monofeme to Estelle30, as she believes that the latter is a more suitable one for PCOS sufferers. And after 7 months of taking it I have noticed that it has helped in a lot of things (though not my hirsuitism, which is the ONE thing I really want fixed) but the downside is that it's made my depression WAY worse than it has been in a long, long time. I used to get chronic anxiety, but now I get the blackest depression.

So I had a decision to make. Try going off the BCP and deal with all the icky symptoms, or move to an anti-depressant to combat the side effect of the BCP. I chose the latter as a lot of the icky symptoms gave me depression anyway, so I started anti-depressants last month, and beside a few mild side-effects that I have been told will pass with time, I've found it quite successful. My moods are so much better and I'm not swinging as violently as I was before. So I'll see how that goes for awhile and hopefully it will iron things out for me.

Anyway, hope this is helpful
Kath

Hey girls just an update. I have neen feeling better on the BCP. SO I may try them for awhile...I mean at least with them I don't bleed all the time. My hemoglobin is still low. Now at 11.1 ( Normal ranges are 12-14) So I don't know.
With my next cycle if there is plenty of heavy bleeding and insanity I will quit and look into other options. Thanks for all your great words of wisdom!
See you on the boards!!!

I've had more than one doctor try to put me on BCP's and I've tried just about every one out there. They ALL give me migraines. I CANNOT take them. However, about 3 years ago I got a Mirena IUD and I love it. I used to bleed a lot due to the spiro I take and now I hardly bleed at all. I am able to tolerate the hormones becuase it's a very low dose and it's directly in my uterus so it's not the same as taking a pill.

Just wanted to say welcome!

Bcps have such a range of effects on different women, it really is a bit disturbing. I guess that's what happens when you mess with hormones. Tricky business.

I also don't approve of taking them indefinitely for PCOS, they will only mask some symptoms for some people and going OFF them can be worse. But as a temporary measure sometimes they're useful. I've been at stages in my life where I couldn't have coped with PCOS and everything else without them. I've also tried various different ones. Diane was the best for my PCOS symptoms, although it didn't regulate my periods as tightly as I would have liked. I was on Microgynon for a while and going off that was hell, I had periods every two weeks. Going off Diane was a much smoother process. So it's worth trying different pills I think, if you must be on the pill.
