Um, actually, many doctors prescribe medications based on the symptoms you have.
I have poly-cystic ovaries (well, ovary, since I lost one to a tortioned ovarian cyst). I'm also not ttc, so I'm on bcp to control cyst growth on my ovary and to prevent pg.
I have IR, so, to help my body use the insulin I produce better, I take met.
Other ladies have hirsuitism so the doctors prescribe spironolactone.
Use of a single medication
can help symptoms other than the intended one. For example, bcp can help with both the IR and the hirsuitism. But sometimes it's not enough or you can't tolerate that medication, so you are prescribed another.
It's all about what issues you have, how severe they are, and if your doctor and you together decide that medication is the right way for you to address them.
Hope this helps!
