BCP and Metformin?

hey! im new to this.. im 22 and newly dx w/ pcos.. took me forever to get a diagnosis!! i even had one doctor tell me this was all in my head :/ anyway.. it seems the only solution im being offered is BCPs. however i hate the side effects i get with bcp.. low sex drive, weight gain ect.. plus.. even on bcp i often still dont get a menstrual period. anyone else have this problem??? Anyway i was researching online an found an article stating that 90% of thin pcos-ers being ovulating when started on metformin. Alhough i dont want to conceive for another couple years.. i would just feel better if i knew i was actually ovulating. does anyone heard of taking BCPs and metformin?? metformin to regulate ovulation (i beleive it does so by decreasing insulin secretion - and therefore decreasing androngen production... leading to more suitable hormone levels for ovulation) and then also taking bcp as a contraceptive method? therefore when i do want to conceive i could d/c the bcp and having a greater likelihood of conception (im terrified of not being able to conveive.. my only real concern associtaed with pcos). anyone heard of anything like this?? thank you for you help

I was prescribed bcp (diane 35) with metformin (half tab/twice daily). The endocrinologist said he has had the best success with this combination of treatment for pcos. I was on diane alone when I was 19 and gained way too much weight with serious depression. Then with the pcos diagnosis at age 23 I found the met reduced these side effects. In fact I lost weight. I take both. If you're having these side effects, talk to your dr about getting a different BCP. I know a lot of my friends had to try a few different brands and types of BCPs before finding one that worked for them.

I've taken BCPs in the past (about 10,11 years ago) and HATED it. I started met in Nov 2005 and for the 1st time had regular periods WITHOUT BCPs. The Met stopped working in May 2006 for some unknown reason and then I got pregnant in October ... total surprise. DH and I had been trying to get pregnant for 9 years!
