Unhappy BCP Not Working

I was diagnosed with pcos about 2 years ago.

I am currently taking 750 mg of glucophage XR 1x per day and am on Sprintec (generic for ortho-cycline)

My problem is that when I am on BCPs I get my period a week early and it lasts for 2 weeks.

Without them I only get it once every other month and the PMS on the off months is unbearable.

This is the 5th diffrent one I have been on, I have been bounced between gluc and Met and the current dosage seems to be the best for me. (I have been doing Atkins since New Years and there is a concern that if I up the dosage any more that my blood sugar will drop too low)

I need suggestions on diffrent BCPs, I already know Ortho Cyclene, triyclene and 777 do not work for me.

Are the side effects diffrent with non-ortho BCPs?

Any other suggestions are welcome!

thanks,
janet

I do not do well with generic bc pills at all. I ALWAYS spot and I never spot on the main line ones. That being said, you may need a pill with a different progestin. Have you tried mircette or ortho-cept (also called desogen)? Both contain desogestrel as the progestin and less estrogen than the ones you mentioned. There are so many out there. Since you are on the ins. meds. maybe you can handle a lighter pill and still cycle. Hope this helps!

Maybe you need a pill with a more powerful progestin. The norgestimat in Ortho cyclen and ortho tricyclen is not a very strong one. It is 250 mg in the Ortho cyclen but that has a progestogenic activity lower than 150 mg desogestrel.

Desogestrel has helped me with my skin. You could also try Yasmin, it made me feel bad but many cysters have great success with it. Its progestin "Drospirenon" is a derivate of spironolactone, which can help reduce hirsutism and acne.

You are the first person I've heard of that is doing both BCP and Met. How does it work for you? Isn't it kind of contradictory? I thought that Met was supposed to help induce ovulation and BCPs obviously don't (I'm not TTC). Please let me know how you're doing on this because I'm trying to figure out what is the best thing for me right now and I'm confused about all the options.

Thanks!

Since I am not trying to get pregnant, the combination of BCP and Gluc are supposed to regulate my hormones.

Prior to the BCP.... The breast discharge, hair growth, and pre-menstrual depression were unbearable,
the current regimen helps somewhat.

My GP seems to know more about pcos than my gyno, and has been far more helpful.

My next GYN appt is in April at which time I am going to have my BCP changed yet again. I'll let you know what (if anything) works.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to have to ask my doctor about that. Please keep us updated on how you're doing.
