Default BCP's?

I am wondering how many of you have found that BCP's have helped with your symptoms? I took them from the age of 13-20 (I'm 25 now) and they did help me to have regular periods...and that's about it. I have a gyno appt tommorow and I have a feeling that she is going to try and get me back on them. I just don't know if the benefits are even worth it. First there's the cost, then there's the fact that I smoke (I know I shouldn't) and that is supposedly not safe with BCP, and I am not in a relationship right now so I have no other reason to take them if you know what I mean. So for those of you who are takeing BCP, has it done anything for you beneficial other than bring back your periods? Thanks!

Talking my experience with bcps

I've been on and off bcps for nearly four years now, and i've noticed quite a few nice effects. Apart from regularising my periods, they also sort out my acne, excess hair growth and reduce my mood swings . However, i find that i can get some nasty headaches and nausea too . It controls your hormones, so naturally it'll hide the symptoms of pcos. but that's all it does: hide them. When you stop they'll all come back with a vengence (i find).
I totally understand why you want to come off of the bcps, smoking or not. why load your body with hormonal chemicals that at best hide your symptoms, leaving them untreated, or at worst, exchanges them for other problems.
Thankfully my cysts have decreased significantly , so my gyn has put me on a progesterone only pill for a few months until they're gone and referred me to an endocrinologist to take care of my long term hormonal imbalances.
Are you seeing an endo? the impression that i got from my gyn was that they might be less inclined to give the pill, but i don't know that for sure . i would like to know more about other cysters' experience with endos, please.
I don't know if i've helped you, but imo if u aren't happy taking it, then it's time to find something else. Research alternatives (metformin, perhaps?) and ask your doc about them.

Unhappy

i knew i has pcod since 17, but i guess it was there long before that. never took bcps until after i got married when i wanted to seriosuly do something about it. and i took it for 6 months.it helped regularise the cycles, but it helped me put on 1kg a month
but when i tried to conceive after maybe 6 months, i had to take just one cycle of clomid and by the grace of almighty, it worked.
now my pcod is back, and i need to do something about it.
bcps do hide the symptoms, but i feel if follow the right way, you can get your body in control and then u need to maintain a strict lifestyle to manage it that way.
