Question Are BCP's necessary...?

Ok so I am new here and was diagnosed with PCOS back in April of this year, I am 21 years old and I was diagnosed after not having a period for 6 months. When I was intially diagnosed I was prescribed Provera (to jumpstart my period) but luckily my period started on its own without me taking one pill! Ok so after that my doctor prescribed me the BCP Femcon. I have YET to take it because I am worried about the side effects and also I dont want to damage my future chances of concieving. My periods so far since the one in April are: Skipped May and June, had one in July, skipped August, had one last month, and I am waiting on one for this month. My question is: What makes BCP's so necessary and if I do take them will I have to stay on them for life? Thanks for responding!

I'm not sure that the research supports the claim that being on BCPs makes it harder to concieve later on... But I haven't done much reading in that area so maybe I'm wrong.

Why did the doctor prescribe you a BCP? Was it to address PCOS symptoms? Contraception? Something else?
