Question Bcp"s & Smoking

Can BCP"S & SMOKING REALLY CAUSE BLOOD CLOTS???
Im so scared, because I smoke and I dont want to have a blood clot/or stroke or even die from them. I want to take them to help me with the pCOS. I have heard even from my DR. that this could happen. Have any of you heard this as well?

I'm not sure what to tell ya, hon. I smoked while on various pills for years and years. In my early 20's my dr. put me on a lo dose pill-loestrin-to minimize possible side effects from smoking. Unfortunately, this pill is highly androgenic and probably caused havoc with my PCOS. I also got pregnant on it. (forgot to take it now and then)

I do know someone who had a stroke at age 18-19 presumably from smoking and the pill.

I just finally quit smoking a couple months ago, so naturally, I'd advise you to try to quit. I tried off and on for probably 10 years and am still not convinced I won't go back after my baby is born so I know it's easier said than done. See if your doctor can help.

Yes, there is a serious risk associated with BCP use and smoking especially after age 35. What you have heard is true.

However, the odds that smoking itself will harm your system are greater than the odds that smoking plus BCPs will cause a cerebrovascular event, or blood clots.

And, smoking will do more harm to you than PCOS probably will. Smoking is the most potentially dangerous/lethal problem you are dealing with here. Not PCOS, not a risk of blood clots. Do your best to try to stop. Smoking can kill you in extremely ugly ways. And in the meanwhile, it can do nasty things to your looks. Good luck, I know it is a tremendously difficult challenge!

And, are you investingating other ways to deal with your PCOS symptoms, besides using BCPs?
