BCP's or something else as an alternative to Metformin??
Hi out there....I've taken Metformin 3 times now and last night was the worst with the nausia, it kept me up practically all night......I am not willing to take it anymore or try Glucophage, because it will probably have the same effect. I wanted to ask you all out there is BCP's an alternative option? I have tried 2 or 3 in the past that made me have a headache and raised my B/P, but maybe it was the dose or brand because years ago when I was in my teens, I took BCP's with out that problem. Any advise or suggestions on how to tackle PCOS and get my periods again, with out metformin?
When you say you've taken Met three times - do you literally mean 3 doses, or that you've tried Met at three different times in your life?
I would sincerely advise you to stick with the Met a while longer. Usually, you can control your s/e by how you eat while on Met. What has your diet been like? Are you cutting out refined carbs? Drinking plenty of water? Etc. For many cysters, the s/e are drastically cut out by changes to their diet.
Take care.

I have taken it for 3 days and I am only taking 1 pill so far and my doc says to take 2 a day, so if its like this on one, I definatly dont want to go to 2......
What is the final dosage your doctor wants you on? You can use split the pills in half as well. If one pill is too strong, too fast - there is nothing wrong with taking half a pill and slowly working your way up. Some cysters stay on half a pill for a week or more, and slowly incorporate the rest of the dose half a pill at a time. It takes some cysters a few months to work their way up, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Every body is different, and will react to varying degrees.
I know it's tough, but don't give up! I've been on Met since late January, and it has really helped me. I've also had some pretty tough days w/side effects.

Hi....the pills aren't the splitable kind and I am thinking that even working my way up will be just as tough with the side effects.....I am just not sure what to do here and I am so worried today.....and my doc said taking only one of the two a day pills is just "waisting pills" What do I do, I have heard of people switching to glucophage xr to minimize side effects, would that be better? I dont know?
Are you on the regular met, or met xr? The xr form would probably be better for you because you don't get the whole dose at once, it's released over time and sometimes a little better for the se's. Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with starting out at a low dose. I have been on 1 pill a day for the past 3 weeks, and I'm supposed to be taking 2. But my doc said that was completely fine so my body gets used to the med. I will probably up my dose tonight and see how it goes. I also take mine 1/2 way through dinner to help with the se's. I hope you can try and stick with it b/c it really can help. Hope you start to feel better!

Can't wait to start WW again and loose the other 15lbs I gained with the last pregnancy and the 30lbs I still needed to lose with the first one.

My doctor had said to me that if I trouble on the met we could try avandia or actos so maybe that's an alternative. But I agree to try the met for a little while longer to see if your body will adapt to it. Also I haven't tried the extended release version but I definitely think it's worth trying.
Try to take met w/ different types of food, w/ milk or fruit etc . . . and maybe you will find something that will get rid of the nausea. I've been taking met for a few weeks and always w/ food but one time I didn't and boy, I did feel it so maybe there's some type of food that'll help you adjust to it.
Hiya for me any form of met just made me so sick. I went thru lots of test and we came to the conclusion that it was my meds. I mean I had a upper GI and lower bowel...Everything!! I have been on actos, didn't work for me and then I as switched to Avandia which worked great as long as I took it evberyday , the same time. Now I have a new doc and I'm on Tri Nessa BCP and I have never been on BCP before so that is a whole different thing. But I will say Avandia is a great alternative to met.

If all you want is to control your hormones and get af, I can suggest the herb Vitex. This has worked wonders for me without any side effects, I now have regular cycles, ovulate, and have no more pms ---it's awesome!! If you are interested...check out the alternative remedies forum on Soulcysters, there are alot of posts about it there.
